Yes. Deliberately watching pornography is prohibited in the ruling cited here from Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta. Its answer on pornography and masturbation addresses watching pornographic films explicitly. If you are asking because you want to stop, you can take that ruling seriously and begin changing your next action today.
This page answers the religious question. For a fuller practical plan, go to how to stop watching porn in Islam.
What the sources say
Quran 24:30–31 directs believing men and women to lower their gaze and protect their chastity. These are the scriptural principles relevant to the discussion; the verses do not name modern websites. Dar al-Ifta’s answer applies the religious ruling to pornographic movies.
The same fatwa discusses a limited scholarly allowance concerning masturbation when an involuntarily aroused person fears committing zina. It still prohibits watching pornography. Do not turn that separate discussion into permission to seek out explicit videos, or assume that watching becomes permissible when it is not accompanied by masturbation. For the separate question, see our masturbation ruling guide.
If an image appears unexpectedly
An unwanted image appearing in a feed is different from deliberately opening a pornographic video and continuing to watch it. In Sahih Muslim 2159a, Jarir asks about a sudden glance and is instructed to turn his eyes away.
Apply that instruction to the next action within your control: close the content, look away, or leave the feed. The report does not give a number of seconds you may keep watching. You do not need to replay the image to check what happened.
If the same account or feed repeatedly exposes you to content you want to avoid, unfollowing it or changing where you spend that time is a practical boundary you can choose. That is a planning suggestion, not a new religious requirement or a promise that urges will disappear.
Repentance after deliberate viewing
Dar al-Ifta’s guidance on repentance describes regret, leaving the sin and sincerely resolving not to return. If another person’s rights are involved, those obligations also need to be addressed. For example, private remorse alone does not resolve harm from sharing someone’s intimate material; seek qualified guidance about repairing the harm without spreading it further.
The same guidance explains that a later repetition does not automatically invalidate earlier sincere repentance. That is a reason to return again, not to plan a future lapse. An app streak cannot determine your sincerity or whether repentance has been accepted.
Our repentance guide explains the wider questions. If you have just returned to the behavior, the relapse guide focuses on what to do next.
Choose one change for today
Knowing the answer and changing a familiar routine are different tasks. Make the next step concrete enough that you can tell whether you did it. For example:
- Leave your phone outside the bedroom tonight, if that is where you tend to return to the content.
- Decide what you will do during that time instead: read, walk, or spend time with someone you trust.
- Review the plan tomorrow and change one part that did not work.
Adapt this example to your circumstances. If your difficult moments happen after stress, a plan built only around bedtime may miss the situation that matters. Our trigger and urge guide helps you think through that next step without submitting private details.
DeenBack’s recovery tools provide habit goals, urge support and progress check-ins. You can download directly or use the optional reflection quiz on this page. The first answer gives a practical step; two further questions add detail. You can use the result without downloading the app.

Is watching porn haram even without masturbation?
Dar al-Ifta prohibits watching pornographic movies in its own right. Its separate discussion of limited circumstances around masturbation does not grant permission to watch pornography.
What should I do if explicit content appears unexpectedly?
Turn away and close or scroll past it. Sahih Muslim 2159a instructs turning the gaze away after a sudden glance; an unexpected image and choosing to continue watching are different situations.
Does a setback mean my earlier repentance was false?
Dar al-Ifta explains that repeating a sin does not automatically cancel earlier sincere repentance. Stop again, return to repentance and adjust your plan. An app cannot judge whether repentance is accepted.
