In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You already know this question has an uncomfortable answer. The fact that you are searching it means part of you suspects the surgery might not be straightforwardly okay โ and that your nafs is not done making its case.
So let us be honest with each other.
The Quick Answer
Cosmetic rhinoplasty โ a nose job done purely to change the appearance of a healthy nose โ is considered haram by the majority of scholars across all four major schools of Islamic jurisprudence.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty โ surgery to correct breathing problems, repair damage from injury, or address a genuine birth defect โ is generally permissible.
The line between the two is real, but the nafs is very good at moving it.
What the Quran and Sunnah Say
The prohibition on cosmetic surgery comes from a core Quranic principle. Allah says:
"...and I will command them so they will change the creation of Allah." โ (Surah An-Nisa, 4:119)
This verse is part of Shaytan's declaration of how he will lead people astray. The scholars of tafsir explain that one of Shaytan's methods is to make people dissatisfied with how Allah created them, then lead them to physically alter it.
The Prophet ๏ทบ made this even more specific:
ููุนููู ุงูููููู ุงููููุงุดูู ูุงุชู ููุงููู ูุณูุชูููุดูู ูุงุชู ููุงููููุงู ูุตูุงุชู ููุงููู ูุชูููู ููุตูุงุชู ููุงููู ูุชููููููุฌูุงุชู ููููุญูุณููู ุงููู ูุบููููุฑูุงุชู ุฎููููู ุงูููููู
"Allah cursed those who do tattoos and those who get tattoos done, those who pluck eyebrows and those who have their eyebrows plucked, and those who file their teeth for beauty โ [all of them] changing the creation of Allah." โ (Sahih Muslim 2125)
The principle scholars extract from this hadith: altering a healthy body part for purely cosmetic reasons is prohibited, because the sole motivation is dissatisfaction with Allah's creation. Rhinoplasty falls squarely within this category when performed on a functioning nose.
Why This Is Actually Hard
Here is the thing that the ruling alone does not address: you are living in a world that has decided your nose should look different.
Social media is a curated gallery of edited faces. Filters narrow and reshape noses before you have even registered what happened. Comparison culture is relentless. And the nafs does not need a reason to feel inadequate โ it just needs an opportunity.
Your pain about your appearance is real. That does not make it a signal to act on.
The nafs has a specific strategy with cosmetic procedures: it promises that the surgery will end the discomfort. "Just this one thing, and I'll feel okay about how I look." Most people who have cosmetic surgery report that the relief is temporary. The underlying habit of finding fault with your appearance simply moves to the next thing.
The Islamic framework addresses the root, not just the symptom.
What to Do About It โ Practical Steps
1. Name the driver honestly. Is this about a functional problem โ difficulty breathing, genuine disfigurement? Or is it about a healthy nose that compares unfavorably to filtered images and cultural ideals? Be honest with yourself before you are honest with a surgeon.
2. Reduce the comparison inputs. Comparison culture cannot be fought while you are saturating in it. If your relationship with your appearance gets worse after time on Instagram, that is information. Audit what you consume. The discomfort you feel about your nose did not come from nowhere.
3. Work on qana'ah โ contentment. Qana'ah (ููููุงุนูุฉ) is a virtue the Prophet ๏ทบ called "a treasure that never runs out." It is not telling yourself your nose is beautiful when you do not believe it. It is shifting your measure of yourself from appearance to character, from external form to internal development.
Dua helps. Try: Allahumma inni as'aluka al-qana'ah โ "O Allah, I ask You for contentment."
4. Work on your character more than your face. Your nafs will always find something. Work on controlling your nafs and you address the root issue โ not just one symptom. See also what is tawadu in islam for the quality of humility that makes contentment with your appearance possible.

5. If the issue is medical, see a doctor โ not a cosmetic surgeon. A deviated septum causing breathing problems is not cosmetic surgery. An injury that has left your nose genuinely disfigured is not cosmetic surgery. If there is a real medical case, consult a scholar alongside your physician and be honest about what the actual problem is.
Dua for Contentment With How Allah Created You
ุงููููููู ูู ุญูุณููููุชู ุฎูููููู ููุญูุณูููู ุฎูููููู
Allahumma hassanta khalqi fa-hassin khuluqi
"O Allah, You have made my physical form good, so make my character good also." โ (Musnad Ahmad 3381)
This dua is powerful. It starts with the acknowledgment that Allah made you well โ and redirects the energy from refining the external to developing the internal.
Common Questions
What if I already had a rhinoplasty before I knew the ruling? Tawbah is available for everything. Allah says: "Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves โ do not despair of Allah's mercy." (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53). You cannot undo what is done, but you can make sincere repentance and redirect the energy that would have gone into more procedures. See how to make sincere tawbah.
Is a septoplasty (internal structure correction) different from rhinoplasty? Yes. Septoplasty corrects internal nasal structure for breathing โ it is not cosmetic and is generally permitted. The question is whether the external appearance is being changed purely for aesthetics. If a procedure addresses both function and cosmetic concerns, scholars differ โ consult a qualified scholar with your specific case.
Does Islam say anything positive about beauty? Yes โ Islam is not anti-beauty. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty." (Sahih Muslim 91). This refers to legitimate forms of beautification: cleanliness, good clothing, what does not require altering the body. The prohibition is specifically on permanently changing healthy body parts to meet shifting beauty standards.
Your Journey Starts Now
The discomfort you feel about your appearance is not unique to you. The nafs is almost universal in finding something to be dissatisfied with. The Islamic solution is not to pretend the discomfort away โ it is to develop a relationship with yourself and with your Creator that is more stable than your feelings about your nose on any given day.
That work takes longer than surgery. It is also the only thing that actually lasts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is rhinoplasty haram in Islam?
Cosmetic rhinoplasty โ changing the shape of a healthy nose purely for aesthetic reasons โ is considered haram by the majority of scholars, as it falls under altering Allah's creation without necessity. Reconstructive rhinoplasty for medical reasons (breathing difficulties, birth defects, injury repair) is generally permitted.
Is a nose job haram if I was born with a deformity?
If the nose causes a genuine physical or functional problem โ breathing obstruction, a significant defect from birth or injury โ correcting it is not considered haram. Scholars distinguish between correcting a deficiency and merely changing what is already healthy.
What if my nose makes me extremely self-conscious?
Psychological distress alone, while real and valid, does not generally cross the threshold scholars use for medical necessity. Islam acknowledges emotional pain but calls us to address it through spiritual means rather than surgical alteration of healthy tissue. That said, seek guidance from a knowledgeable scholar for your specific situation.
Is a deviated septum surgery haram?
No. Correcting a deviated septum that causes breathing problems is functional medicine, not cosmetic surgery, and is entirely permissible. The prohibition is on cosmetic alteration of a healthy nose, not on surgery that restores or improves function.
How do I deal with hating my appearance as a Muslim?
Islam teaches qana'ah โ contentment with what Allah has given. This is not denial of your feelings, but a practice of redirecting attention from comparison to gratitude. Working on your relationship with your body through dhikr, understanding the purpose of your creation, and limiting exposure to comparison culture are the Islamic tools for this struggle.
