In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You are expecting a baby โ or someone close to you is โ and there is talk of a baby shower. Someone in your family or community has raised the question: is this even allowed in Islam?
The anxiety around celebrations is real in Muslim communities, and for good reason. We are told to be careful about imitating other cultures and about protecting our gatherings from haram elements. But the fear of everything unfamiliar can also go too far.
Let us look at what Islam actually says about celebrations, what makes a gathering permissible or not, and what a halal baby shower actually looks like.
The Quick Answer
A baby shower is not mentioned in Islamic texts โ which means the ruling is determined by the principle of ibahah (permissibility as default) and by what actually happens at the event.
The broad ruling: a women-only gathering to celebrate and gift a pregnant mother, with no haram elements, is permissible.
What makes it potentially impermissible:
- Mixed gender gatherings with khalwah (forbidden seclusion/mixing)
- Music and entertainment of a prohibited nature
- Serving alcohol (even to non-Muslim guests)
- Imitating a specific religious ceremony of another faith
The event is not haram because of its name or its Western origin. It is the substance that matters.
What the Quran and Sunnah Say About Celebrations
Islam is not against joy. The Prophet ๏ทบ celebrated births โ the aqiqah is a specific sunnah for welcoming a new child. The Companions celebrated marriages, returns from journeys, and other milestones.
"And of His mercy He has made for you the night and the day, that you may rest therein and seek from His bounty." โ (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:73)
Rest, joy, and celebration of blessings are part of Allah's mercy โ not something to be eliminated from Muslim life.
The Prophet ๏ทบ also said:
"The best of you is one who is best to his family." โ (Sunan Ibn Majah 1977)
Celebrating a new arrival and supporting a pregnant mother with practical gifts is an expression of being good to family. Islam actively encourages this kind of community support.
What the Sunnah does prohibit is specific: gatherings involving alcohol, music of a forbidden kind, mixing of genders in impermissible ways, or the imitation of religious ceremonies specific to other faiths.
Why This Is Actually Hard
The discomfort many Muslims feel about baby showers comes from a few real tensions:
Fear of bid'ah: anything that "feels Western" triggers concern about innovation. But bid'ah specifically applies to religious innovations โ new acts of worship not sanctioned by the Prophet ๏ทบ. A social celebration is not an act of worship. It is a cultural practice.
The nafs of overcaution: some Muslims struggle with the opposite of temptation โ an excessive scrupulosity that makes everything feel forbidden. The nafs of overcaution can isolate you from your family and community without any religious benefit.
Real haram elements: the concern about baby showers is legitimate when the event actually involves music, mixing, or alcohol. These are real issues that do occur at many baby showers and genuinely require a Muslim's careful navigation.
The key is to apply the correct framework: look at the substance of the event, not the name.
What to Do โ Practical Steps
Step 1: Understand What You Are Being Invited To
Before accepting or declining, find out what the baby shower actually involves:
- Is it women-only or mixed gender?
- Will there be alcohol?
- What kind of music (if any)?
- What activities are planned?
This information tells you whether you can attend, need to decline specific parts, or should suggest modifications.
Step 2: If You Are Hosting โ Keep It Halal
If you are the one organizing the gathering, you have full control:
- Keep it women-only (the traditional format anyway)
- Skip the alcohol entirely โ mocktails and good food are just as celebratory
- Choose background sounds or anasheed instead of music with prohibited instruments
- Keep games simple, fun, and modest
- Make dua together for the mother and baby โ this elevates the entire event
Step 3: Perform the Aqiqah After the Birth
The aqiqah โ slaughtering one sheep for a girl, two for a boy, on the seventh day after birth โ is a confirmed sunnah. The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"Every child is pledged by his aqiqah, which is slaughtered on his behalf on the seventh day." โ (Sunan Abi Dawud 2838)
Aqiqah is the Islamic practice for welcoming a new child. A pre-birth celebration (baby shower) and the post-birth aqiqah are complementary, not competing.
Step 4: Make the Gathering Intentionally Islamic
Add elements that make the gathering an act of worship:
- Open with a short dua for the mother and baby
- Share a relevant hadith about the blessings of children
- Give practical gifts the mother will genuinely use
- Close with collective dua
This transforms a social gathering into something that earns reward.

"O Allah, bless them in what You have provided them and provide them with something better." โ (Sahih Muslim 2042)
This dua โ said when someone shows you their family or provision โ is perfect for a baby shower setting. Teach it to the group and say it together for the expectant mother.
Common Questions
My non-Muslim family wants to throw me a baby shower. How do I handle it?
Accept the love behind the gesture. Kindly communicate your preferences: women-only guests, no alcohol, no music with instruments. Most families will accommodate you, especially when you frame it as personal preference rather than religious judgment of their practices. The underlying spirit โ celebrating and supporting you โ is beautiful.
Is it haram to attend a mixed baby shower if I lower my gaze and do not do anything haram myself?
Scholars differ. Many say attending a mixed gathering where you are not yourself doing anything haram is permitted, especially when the gathering involves family. Others advise avoiding mixed social gatherings altogether. This is a question for your local scholar based on your specific situation.
Is the gender reveal part of a baby shower haram?
A gender reveal event that is permissible in form (women only or appropriate mixed gathering with no haram elements) is not itself forbidden. See our deeper analysis at is throwing a gender reveal haram. The celebration of new life is permissible; the specific elements determine the ruling. For a wider view of celebrations and Islamic principles, our guide on is celebrating graduation haram walks through a similar analysis.
What about celebrating after the birth โ is that haram?
Celebrating after the birth is even more established in the Sunnah through the aqiqah. A post-birth gathering to visit the mother and baby, make dua, and give gifts is an act of sunnah, not something requiring any special justification. See also our guide on is celebrating birthdays haram for context on celebrations generally.
Celebrate the Blessing, Not the Haram
A new child is one of the greatest blessings Allah can give. Islam does not ask you to receive that blessing in silence and isolation. It asks you to receive it with gratitude, modesty, and community.
A halal baby shower โ a gathering of women who love the mother, who give practical gifts, who make dua, and who leave the haram at the door โ is not an imitation of anything problematic. It is a community doing what communities do when a new life is on its way.
Celebrate the blessing. Keep it clean. And prepare your home with taqwa for the soul that is about to arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a baby shower haram in Islam?
A baby shower is not explicitly mentioned in Islamic texts, so the ruling depends on what the event involves. If the gathering is between women only (as is traditional), involves permissible activities, no music, no mixing of genders, and no imitation of specific religious rituals of other faiths, most scholars consider it permissible. Events that involve mixing, alcohol, music, or other haram elements are not.
Is a baby shower an imitation of non-Muslims (tashabbuh)?
The concern about tashabbuh (imitating non-Muslims) applies when you imitate something specific to their religious practice. A gathering of women to celebrate and gift a pregnant mother is not a religious ritual โ it is a social custom. Most scholars distinguish between imitating religious ceremonies and simply sharing a cultural practice. The substance of the gathering matters more than its Western name.
Is it better to do an aqiqah instead of a baby shower?
Aqiqah is a confirmed sunnah performed after the baby is born. A baby shower celebrates before the birth. There is no contradiction โ you can do a simple gathering before the birth and perform aqiqah after. Aqiqah is obligatory (or highly recommended) for those who can afford it; a pre-birth celebration is entirely optional.
What if non-Muslim family members are hosting the baby shower?
If non-Muslim relatives host a gathering with haram elements (alcohol, mixing, music), politely decline the haram portions or suggest alternatives. Your deen does not require you to participate in what is forbidden just to keep the peace. But there is no need to lecture โ just excuse yourself from the specific haram elements.
Is playing baby shower games haram?
Games at a women-only gathering with no gambling element are generally permissible. The concern would be games involving music, immodesty, or betting. Simple, fun group activities among women are within the permissible bounds.
