بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The moment you put on the ihram garments and say the talbiyah, something changes.
You have left the ordinary world. You are no longer a professional, a parent, a person of status or wealth. You are a pilgrim — equal to every other pilgrim before Allah, wrapped in the same white cloth that will one day be your shroud.
But the ihram is not just clothing. It is a set of rules — restrictions that test the nafs and deepen the experience. Knowing them before you arrive is not pedantry; it is the difference between a Hajj or Umrah where you are spiritually present and one where you are constantly anxious about mistakes.
What Is Ihram?
Ihram إِحْرَام comes from the root meaning sacred, forbidden, or protected. Entering ihram means entering a protected state — protected from your own desires, from distractions, from the usual appetites that define ordinary life.
It has two parts:
- The intention (niyyah): Made at or before the miqat — the ritual boundary points surrounding Makkah
- The talbiyah: Recited to signal the beginning of the ihram state
Once in ihram, you remain in it until you complete the rites and perform the tahalul (the exit from ihram by cutting or shaving hair).
Ihram Garments: Men
What to wear:
- Izar: an unstitched lower cloth wrapped around the waist, covering from navel to below the knee
- Rida: an unstitched upper cloth draped over the shoulders
- Sandals that expose the top of the foot (traditional; modern sandals with straps are generally accepted)
What NOT to wear:
- Sewn or tailored garments (shirts, trousers, underwear, socks)
- Anything that covers the head (hat, hood, cap, umbrella touching the head)
- Gloves
The Prophet ﷺ specified: "Do not wear shirts, turbans, trousers, hooded cloaks, or shoes — unless someone cannot find sandals, in which case let him wear shoes after cutting them below the ankles." (Sahih Bukhari 1542)
Ihram Garments: Women
What to wear:
- Normal modest Islamic clothing — any color, including black
- Socks if desired
- Headscarf
What NOT to wear:
- Face veil (niqab) — the face must remain uncovered while in ihram
- Gloves — hands must remain uncovered
Women may wear any color. The prohibition on niqab during ihram applies even to women who wear niqab normally.

The Prohibited Acts During Ihram
These apply to both men and women unless noted:
1. Sexual relations and intimacy Sexual intercourse before the first tahalul (after stoning and shaving/trimming on Day 10 of Hajj) invalidates the Hajj. A severe fidyah applies. Sexual intercourse between tahalul awwal and tahalul thani (after tawaf al-ifadah) is also prohibited.
2. Marriage contracts Entering a marriage contract while in ihram is prohibited and invalid.
3. Cutting hair or nails No hair may be cut, shaved, or removed — from any part of the body. No nails may be clipped. The wisdom is a return to the natural state before Allah.
4. Using perfume No perfumed products — scented soap, deodorant, perfumed lotion, incense — may be used on the body or clothing. The Prophet ﷺ specifically mentioned that the muhrim (one in ihram) should not touch perfume. (Sahih Bukhari 1851)
5. Men covering the head Men may not cover the head while in ihram. An umbrella held above the head is permitted.
6. Women covering the face Women may not cover the face with a niqab while in ihram. They may lower a head covering over their face when passing men, according to some scholars, but a formal niqab is not permitted.
7. Hunting or killing land animals Hunting is forbidden during ihram and within the Haram boundaries. (Quran, Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:95)
8. Cutting plants in the Haram Cutting trees or plants within the boundaries of the Haram is forbidden.
What Is Permitted During Ihram
Some actions are often wrongly assumed to be prohibited:
- Bathing or showering (using unscented soap and shampoo)
- Changing the ihram garments (you can wash or replace them)
- Looking in a mirror
- Wearing a belt or money pouch around the waist
- Using an umbrella for shade (but not in contact with the head for men)
- Wearing glasses
- Eating, drinking, and sleeping normally
- Removing lice (some scholars require fidyah if the body is scratched and hair falls out as a result)
Violations and Expiation (Fidyah)
If you violate an ihram restriction:
Standard fidyah (for hair removal, nail cutting, head covering, perfume use): Choose one of:
- Fast for three days
- Feed six poor people (half a sa' each — approximately 1.5 kg of food per person)
- Sacrifice a sheep
Hunting: The expiation is a domesticated animal equivalent to what was hunted, as decided by two just Muslims, given as a sacrifice.
Sexual intercourse (before tahalul): If before the first tahalul in Hajj, the Hajj is invalid. The couple must: continue completing the Hajj, make up the Hajj next year, and sacrifice a camel.
Entering the Miqat in Ihram
The miqat مِيقَات is the boundary surrounding Makkah at which all pilgrims must enter ihram before proceeding. The five main miqats correspond to the directions of approach:
- Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali): For pilgrims from Madinah
- Al-Juhfah (near Rabigh): For pilgrims from Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and the west
- Qarn al-Manazil (al-Sayl): For pilgrims from Najd and the east
- Yalamlam: For pilgrims from Yemen and beyond
- Dhat Irq: For pilgrims from Iraq
International pilgrims on planes cross the miqat in the air. Most flights announce when the aircraft is crossing the miqat boundary. Enter ihram on the plane before crossing — or enter it at the airport before departure if uncertain.
Common Questions About Ihram Rules
What if I accidentally apply perfume while in ihram? Wash it off as quickly as possible. The sin is in the deliberate or prolonged use. If it was genuinely accidental and brief, scholars differ on whether fidyah is required. To be safe, make istighfar and consider a fidyah.
My shoe strap touched the top of my foot — is my ihram invalid? No. The restriction on shoes is not about straps touching the top — it is about wearing shoes that fully cover the foot and ankle in the manner of regular footwear. Modern sandals with toe straps are generally permitted.
I trimmed a loose nail before realizing I was already in ihram. What do I do? Make istighfar and, to be safe, perform the standard fidyah. The intention matters — accidental violations are treated differently from deliberate ones, but the safer path is expiation.
How is ihram for Umrah different from Hajj ihram? The garments and prohibitions are identical. The difference is in when and how you exit. For Umrah: enter ihram at the miqat, perform tawaf and sa'i, then trim/shave hair to exit ihram. For Hajj: entered at the miqat (or in Makkah for Tamattu pilgrims), and exited in stages after the Day of Nahr. See hajj step by step, what is umrah, and dua for hajj for the full sequences and supplications. The central ritual you perform in ihram is also explained in what is tawaf.
The Sacred Simplicity of Ihram
Two pieces of white cloth. No phone case visible. No designer labels. No status markers. Just you, your duas, and your Lord.
The ihram is not a burden. It is a liberation — from the nafs and its attachments, from the ego and its presentations. Every pilgrim, from every country and status, in the same two cloths, circling the same House.
That equality is the point. Experience it fully.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is ihram?
Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters at the miqat before beginning Hajj or Umrah. It involves both a physical component (the ihram garments) and a spiritual commitment (the intention and talbiyah), along with specific restrictions that remain in place until the sacred rites are completed.
What do men wear in ihram?
Men wear two pieces of unstitched white cloth: the izar (lower garment wrapped around the waist) and the rida (upper garment draped over the shoulder). No sewn or tailored clothing is worn. Sandals that expose the top of the foot are the traditional footwear.
What do women wear in ihram?
Women wear their normal modest Islamic clothing. There is no special garment requirement. Women must not cover their faces (niqab) or hands with gloves while in ihram — this is specific to the ihram state.
What breaks ihram?
Ihram ends when the rituals are complete and the hair is cut or shaved (for Hajj) or hair is trimmed (for Umrah). It is not broken by prohibited acts — those acts incur expiation (fidyah) but do not exit you from ihram.
What expiation is required if you violate ihram?
The general fidyah for violations such as shaving, cutting nails, using perfume, or covering the head is: fasting three days, or feeding six poor people (0.5 sa' of food each), or sacrificing a sheep. Sexual intercourse before the main tahalul invalidates Hajj — a more severe expiation applies.
