In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

How to stop gooning in Islam

You already know this is destroying you. Not just spiritually โ€” though it is โ€” but practically. Your focus is gone. Your prayers feel hollow. You've lost hours, sometimes entire nights, to something you feel disgusted by afterward.

This guide doesn't judge you. But it is going to be honest with you, because that's what you need to actually stop.

What's Happening Spiritually

Islam describes two states of the heart: alive and dead. Alive hearts respond to the Quran, feel the weight of sin, and long for Allah. Dead hearts are numb โ€” they go through the motions without feeling anything.

The Prophet ๏ทบ warned: "Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body. If it becomes good, the whole body becomes good. And if it becomes corrupt, the whole body becomes corrupt. Beware! It is the heart." (Bukhari 52)

Extended exposure to pornography and the behavior around it does precisely what the hadith warns against. It numbs the heart. That disconnection you feel from Allah is not random โ€” it is a direct consequence of what you are feeding your heart.

Allah says:

Bal raana 'alaa quloobihim maa kaanoo yaksiboon

"Rather, their hearts have been covered by what they used to do." โ€” (Surah Al-Mutaffifin, 83:14)

The raan โ€” the covering over the heart โ€” is not permanent. But it does not lift on its own. You have to act.

Why This Habit Is Especially Hard to Break

This behavior trains the brain to require an escalating level of stimulation. Normal pleasures โ€” a good conversation, a beautiful sunset, the peace after salah โ€” feel pale by comparison. That is not weakness. That is what happens to a brain that has been conditioned to extremes.

The nafs exploits this. When real life feels bland and insufficient, the nafs knows exactly where the door is. It will manufacture excuses: "just once," "I'm stressed," "I'll stop properly next week."

Inna an-nafsa la-ammaaratun bil-soo'

"Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil." โ€” (Surah Yusuf, 12:53)

The nafs is persistent. Your approach to stopping needs to be more persistent.

Step-by-Step: How to Stop

Step 1: Eliminate access completely

Half-measures do not work here. You need to make the behavior physically impossible in your highest-risk moments:

  • Install a DNS-level content filter on your device that you cannot easily disable
  • Give the password to a trusted person
  • Delete all saved content and browsing history
  • Remove private browsing capability
  • Charge your phone outside your bedroom โ€” always

This is not about permanent deprivation. It is about removing the fuel from the fire while you rebuild your patterns.

Step 2: Map your high-risk windows

When does it happen? For most people, it's a specific window: late at night, alone, bored or emotionally exhausted. Write down your pattern. Then plan what you will do in those exact hours: a Quran recitation, a walk, a call with a friend, sleep.

The plan must be specific. "I'll do something else" is not a plan. "At 11 p.m. I will recite Surah Al-Mulk and make wudu, then sleep" is a plan.

Step 3: Use the wudu circuit breaker

When the pull hits โ€” even a small one โ€” make wudu immediately. Do not wait until you feel "close to the edge." The urge begins long before it feels urgent. Wudu breaks the mental state that feeds the behavior. It is a physical reset that also renews your intention.

Then pray 2 rakat. Even a brief, sincere prayer. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Two rakat of prayer are better than the world and everything in it." (Muslim 1412) It is also the fastest way to change your internal state.

Step 4: Fast regularly

The Prophet ๏ทบ prescribed fasting specifically for those struggling with desires they cannot yet act on in a halal way: "Let him fast, for it will be a shield for him." (Bukhari 5065)

Fasting on Mondays and Thursdays is sunnah. It also trains the part of your brain that handles delayed gratification โ€” the exact faculty you need to strengthen. Start with one fast per week and build from there.

Step 5: Rebuild stimulation from halal sources

Your brain needs stimulation โ€” that's normal. The problem is the source. Deliberately introduce high-engagement halal alternatives:

  • Intense physical exercise (the dopamine release is real)
  • Deep Quran study with tafsir
  • A skill you're learning (Arabic, woodworking, a sport)
  • Strong social connection with brothers/sisters

This is not a distraction. It is rebuilding the brain's ability to feel reward from real-life experiences. It takes weeks, but it works.

Step 6: Make tawbah part of your daily routine โ€” not just after a slip

Most people only make tawbah after they fall. But the Prophet ๏ทบ would make istighfar 70-100 times a day even though he was the most pure of creation. (Bukhari 6307)

Morning and evening adhkar contain specific phrases of istighfar. Make them non-negotiable. This way, tawbah becomes a daily practice of proximity to Allah, not a panic response after sin.

Making It Stick: The Accountability Piece

Tell someone. Not everything โ€” just that you're working on this. A friend who checks in weekly. An accountability partner who receives a weekly report from an app. Someone.

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "A believer to a believer is like a building โ€” each part strengthens the other." (Bukhari 481) You are not meant to fight your nafs alone.

Common Mistakes

  • Deleting content but keeping access โ€” if private browsing is still on, the content filter is decorative. Remove every door.
  • Relying on shame to stop โ€” shame compounds the cycle. The shame makes you feel worse, and feeling worse triggers the behavior. Tawbah is regret + stopping + resolving not to return. It is functional, not emotional punishment.
  • Trying to "moderate" rather than stop โ€” this behavior does not respond to moderation. The brain requires a complete pattern break for the conditioning to undo.

Common Questions

Does this make my prayers invalid?

The behavior itself does not invalidate past prayers. However, it does require ghusl (ritual bath) afterward, which must happen before your next prayer. If you pray without ghusl knowingly, that prayer is invalid.

Am I too far gone to fix this?

No. The doors of tawbah do not close while you are alive. "Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than someone who finds their camel in the desert after losing it." (Bukhari 6309) No matter how long this has gone on, you are not beyond recovery.

How do I handle the flatness I feel when I first stop?

The emotional numbness during early recovery is real. Your brain is readjusting. It takes 2-4 weeks. Fill that time with dhikr, exercise, and human connection. The feeling of aliveness returns โ€” and when it does, the peace of a clean heart is incomparable.

Start Here, Start Now

You don't need a perfect plan. You need one action tonight:

Charge your phone outside your bedroom.

That's it. One change to your environment. Then tomorrow, add the content filter. Then the fasting. Build the system one piece at a time.

The person you are trying to become is not a fantasy. They are who you are without this habit. Go get them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is gooning and why is it harmful in Islam?

Gooning refers to extended sessions of masturbation while consuming pornography, often lasting hours. It is harmful in Islam because it combines multiple prohibitions โ€” pornography and masturbation โ€” while doing extreme damage to self-control, spirituality, and daily function.

Is gooning worse than regular masturbation?

Yes, in terms of impact. The extended nature of it causes deeper habituation to pornography, more severe dopamine disruption, and greater spiritual disconnection. It is harder to recover from because the brain becomes conditioned to very high levels of stimulation.

What do I do immediately after relapsing?

Stop. Make wudu immediately. Say Astaghfirullah three times. Pray 2 rakat of tawbah prayer. Do not spiral into shame โ€” that leads back into the cycle. Get up and re-engage with your normal routine the same day.

How do I avoid the triggers that lead to gooning?

Remove access completely: delete saved content, set up a content filter, charge your phone outside your bedroom, and plan what you will do during your highest-risk hours. The environment must change before the behavior can.

How long before the urges get easier to manage?

Most people notice significantly weaker urges after 30-40 days of consistent avoidance. The first 2 weeks are hardest. After 90 days, many describe feeling like a different person in terms of focus, emotion regulation, and spiritual connection.
