In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You have just completed Ramadan โ a month of fasting, extra prayers, Quran recitation, and fighting your nafs in ways you did not think you had the strength for. And now, before the celebration of Eid begins, there is one more obligation waiting.
Sadaqat al-Fitr. Zakat al-Fitr. The charity of breaking the fast.
Many Muslims know it exists but are fuzzy on the details: exactly how much? When? For who? In food or cash? This guide answers all of it clearly, so you can complete Ramadan the right way.
Why Zakat al-Fitr Exists
The Prophet ๏ทบ made Zakat al-Fitr an obligation before Eid, with a specific dual purpose:
ููุฑูุถู ุฑูุณูููู ุงูููููู ุตูู ุงููู ุนููู ูุณูู ุฒูููุงุฉู ุงููููุทูุฑู ุทูููุฑูุฉู ูููุตููุงุฆูู ู ู ููู ุงููููุบููู ููุงูุฑููููุซู ููุทูุนูู ูุฉู ููููู ูุณูุงููููู
"The Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ made Zakat al-Fitr obligatory as a purification for the fasting person from vain talk and obscenity, and as food for the poor."
โ (Abu Dawud 1609, sunnah.com)
Two purposes: purification of the fast, and ensuring the poor can celebrate Eid with dignity.
This is what makes Zakat al-Fitr beautiful โ it is designed so that no poor Muslim ends Ramadan worrying about food on Eid day. Your giving makes their celebration possible.
Step 1: Confirm You Are Obligated
Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory on every Muslim who:
- Is alive at sunset on the last day of Ramadan (the night of Eid)
- Has food in excess of their own needs for that night and day
Notice what is not a requirement: the nisab (minimum wealth threshold for annual Zakat). Zakat al-Fitr is separate โ it is a much lower threshold than annual Zakat. If you have enough food for yourself tonight and some left over, you owe Zakat al-Fitr.
You pay it for yourself and for every dependent:
- Your spouse
- Your children (including adult children you fully support)
- Scholars differ on whether parents under your financial care are included โ the more careful position includes them
So a family of four pays four times the per-person amount.
Step 2: Calculate the Amount
The original Sunnah amount is one sa' of a staple food per person.
A sa' is a volumetric measure. Scholars have estimated it at:
- Approximately 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs) of wheat
- Approximately 3 kg (6.6 lbs) of barley, dates, or raisins
In practice, most Muslim communities now pay a monetary equivalent for convenience. The amount is calculated by local Islamic organizations based on current staple food prices. In most Western countries in recent years, this has ranged from 15 USD per person, or equivalent local currency.
Your local masjid or a reputable zakat organization in your country will publish the current year's amount annually. Check with them for the current figure.
Step 3: Understand the Timing
The ideal time to pay: Ibn Abbas ุฑุถู ุงููู ุนูู reported:
"Whoever pays it before the prayer, it is an accepted Zakat. Whoever pays it after the prayer, it is an ordinary charity." โ (Abu Dawud 1609)
This means:
- Before Eid prayer = Zakat al-Fitr (the full obligation, purifying your fast)
- After Eid prayer = Still good as regular sadaqah, but the obligation is missed
The best time to pay early: From the beginning of the last few days of Ramadan, so organizations can distribute it in time for Eid morning.
Many scholars say you can pay it from the beginning of Ramadan onward, though the obligation itself becomes binding at the last night. Paying early reduces stress and ensures timely distribution.
Do not delay: If Eid prayer comes and you have not yet paid, pay immediately after โ but understand that you have missed the ideal window. The sin is minor if it was accidental; resolve to pay on time next year.
Step 4: Choose Where to Pay
Option 1: Your local masjid Most masjids collect and distribute Zakat al-Fitr locally. This is often the best option because it directly benefits Muslims in your community, and the poor families receive it before Eid prayer.
Option 2: Established zakat organizations Organizations like Islamic Relief, Zakat Foundation, LaunchGood campaigns, and others distribute Zakat al-Fitr nationally and internationally to eligible recipients. This is ideal if your local area has no organized collection or if you want to direct funds to areas with greater need.
Option 3: Direct giving to a poor Muslim family If you personally know a poor Muslim family, you can give directly. This is valid โ the key is that it reaches an eligible recipient.

Step 5: Confirm Eligibility of Recipients
Zakat al-Fitr goes to the poor and needy Muslims (fuqara and masakeen). It is not given to:
- Wealthy people
- Non-Muslims (scholarly majority position โ some scholars permit, but the majority is stricter here)
- Your own dependents (since you are already responsible for their maintenance)
Reliable Islamic organizations vet their recipients so you do not need to verify this yourself when paying through them.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Forgetting about dependents. The per-person obligation means a family of four owes four times the amount. Many people pay only for themselves. Check your count.
Paying after Eid prayer. It happens โ people get caught up in preparations. Set a calendar reminder in the last week of Ramadan to pay early.
Waiting until the last day. Organizations need time to distribute before Eid morning. Pay at least 2โ3 days before Eid so the charity actually reaches recipients before the prayer.
Confusing it with annual Zakat. Zakat al-Fitr is separate from the 2.5% annual Zakat on savings. Paying one does not count for the other. Read how to calculate zakat for clarity on the annual obligation.
Paying too little. Check the current year's amount with your masjid or Islamic organization โ inflation affects the monetary equivalent annually.
Common Questions
"My baby was born during Ramadan โ do I pay for them?" If the baby was born before sunset on the last night of Ramadan, you owe Zakat al-Fitr for them. If born after sunset (i.e., during Eid night), most scholars say it is not obligatory but recommended. When in doubt, pay for the baby โ the amount is small and the intention is good.
"Can I give Zakat al-Fitr to a non-Muslim?" The majority scholarly position is that Zakat al-Fitr is specifically for poor Muslims. Sadaqah (voluntary charity) can and should be given to non-Muslims in need. Keep the two distinct in your giving.
"I forgot to pay Zakat al-Fitr this year. What do I do?" Pay it as soon as you remember, as a combination of making up the missed obligation and as sadaqah. Sincerely repent for the delay and commit to paying on time in future years. Allah is Forgiving.
"Is Zakat al-Fitr the same as Fitrana?" Yes. Fitrana is a commonly used South Asian term for Zakat al-Fitr โ they refer to the same obligation.
Closing โ Complete Ramadan the Right Way
Ramadan ends with one final act before the celebration: ensuring that no Muslim neighbor goes hungry on Eid morning. Your Zakat al-Fitr makes Eid a celebration for everyone โ not just those who can afford it.
The calculation is simple. The timing is manageable. The impact is real.
Pay early, pay for every dependent, and choose a reliable channel. Then step into Eid knowing your fast has been purified and your charity has landed.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is Zakat al-Fitr due?
Zakat al-Fitr becomes obligatory at sunset on the last day of Ramadan (the beginning of Eid night) and must be paid before the Eid prayer. Paying it early โ from the beginning of Ramadan or at least a day or two before Eid โ is recommended to ensure it reaches those in need in time.
How much is Zakat al-Fitr?
The amount is one sa' (approximately 2.5โ3 kg) of a staple food such as wheat, barley, dates, or raisins. Many scholars and scholars' organizations set the monetary equivalent annually based on local staple food prices. In 2025โ2026, this typically ranges from $10โ$15 per person in Western countries.
Who must pay Zakat al-Fitr?
Every Muslim who has food in excess of their needs on the night of Eid must pay Zakat al-Fitr โ for themselves and for every dependent they provide for (spouse, children, and some scholars say parents under their care). It is not linked to the zakat nisab (minimum wealth threshold).
Can Zakat al-Fitr be paid in cash?
The majority scholarly position is that Zakat al-Fitr should be paid in food (the original Sunnah). However, many contemporary scholars โ particularly those who follow the Hanafi position โ permit paying the monetary equivalent, especially in contexts where recipients need cash more than food. Check with a local scholar for guidance applicable to your situation.
Where should Zakat al-Fitr be given?
It should be given to the poor and needy Muslims. Locally, this means your masjid's Zakat al-Fitr collection, or directly to a poor Muslim family you know. Nationally or internationally, established zakat organizations accept and distribute Zakat al-Fitr to eligible recipients.
