In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

It Feels Smaller Than It Is
Vaping is easy to underestimate. No smoke, no lingering smell, no ashtray, no obvious sign that anything is wrong. It fits in your pocket, it comes in fruit flavours, and half your friends do it. The whole experience is designed to feel casual โ which is exactly what makes it so effective at creating dependence before you notice.
But the nicotine is real, the addiction is real, and the compulsion to reach for the vape whenever you are bored, stressed, or waiting for something is real. If you are searching for how to stop, some part of you already knows this has more of a grip on you than you initially signed up for.
The Islamic principle here is simple: you were not given this body to fill its lungs with unnecessary harm. The question now is how you actually get out.
What Islam Says
Allah says in the Quran:
ููููุง ุชููููููุง ุจูุฃูููุฏููููู ู ุฅูููู ุงูุชููููููููุฉู
Wa la tulqu bi-aydikum ila al-tahlukah.
"And do not throw yourselves into destruction." โ (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:195)
The Prophet ๏ทบ also established the foundational Islamic principle: "There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm" (Ibn Majah 2340). Vaping introduces documented harm to the respiratory system while delivering a highly addictive substance. This is why the majority of Islamic scholars who have addressed vaping specifically have ruled it impermissible, applying the same reasoning as for tobacco products.
The good news: you can leave it, and the mechanics of quitting are well understood.
Step-by-Step Guide to Quitting Vaping
Step 1: Set a quit date within the next week
Not "when things calm down." Not "after the weekend." Within seven days. Research consistently shows that a specific, near-term quit date produces better outcomes than an open-ended intention to quit. Tell someone your date.
Step 2: Throw away your equipment today
Your vape device, your pods, your spare coils, your backup. All of it. Not "in case you need it" โ away. Keep one removes the barrier to relapse to basically zero. This single step makes the next few days significantly easier.
Step 3: Use nicotine replacement if the cravings are intense
Vaping typically delivers nicotine at similar or higher levels than cigarettes. If your usage has been heavy, you may experience real withdrawal symptoms: irritability, difficulty concentrating, strong cravings. Nicotine patches, gum, or lozenges are permissible Islamic means of managing this. Speak to a pharmacist or GP about the right approach for your usage level.
Step 4: Identify your vaping triggers
Vaping tends to happen at predictable moments: driving, after meals, during social events, when stressed, when bored. Spend a day or two consciously noting when the urge to vape appears. That pattern is your work plan.
For each trigger, decide in advance what you will do instead:
- After meals: Make wudu and recite sunnah post-meal dhikr
- When stressed: Three deep breaths followed by hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakeel
- During social situations: Hold a cold drink, step outside for air rather than for a vape
- Boredom: Keep tasbeeh beads or a short dhikr list in your pocket
Step 5: Rebuild your breathing relationship
One thing vapers often miss is the breathing ritual โ the slow inhale, the pause, the exhale. You can get this without the nicotine: simple deep breathing exercises, practiced at the moments cravings hit, satisfy some of the physical compulsion while also being actively calming. Three deliberate breaths can interrupt a craving before it peaks.
Step 6: Make your social environment supportive
If everyone around you vapes, quitting is harder but not impossible. Tell your social circle you are quitting. Most people will respect it. If someone persistently offers you a vape, a simple "I am quitting" is enough โ you do not owe a longer explanation. It is also worth asking yourself whether any part of your social life is organized around vaping, and whether those patterns need to shift.
Step 7: Track your streak and your money
Two powerful motivators: a streak counter showing your days since quitting, and a running total of what you have saved financially. Vaping is expensive. The money saved in a month is usually enough for something meaningful. Make both numbers visible.

Making It Stick โ The Habit Science
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most regular and consistent, even if they are small" (Sahih Bukhari 6464). The neuroscience of habit formation agrees: small, repeated actions build new neural pathways. Vaping built a pathway; consistent new actions build a better one.
Anchor your quit to salah. Make the 15 minutes before each prayer a no-vaping zone. You already have five natural daily anchors โ use them. Over time, the gaps between prayers become vape-free by default.
The first week is the hardest. Plan it specifically. Know that you will feel irritable and that cravings will peak in the first 72 hours. Schedule extra physical activity, extra social time with non-vapers, and extra Quran or dhikr. These are not random suggestions โ they directly affect the brain chemistry that nicotine has been regulating.
Relapse is not the end. If you vape after a period of quitting, respond immediately: throw away what you have, reset your quit date, and analyse what triggered it. Every quit attempt makes the next one more likely to succeed.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Keeping your vape "for emergencies." There are no vaping emergencies. Having it available guarantees you will use it when the craving peaks. Remove all access.
Switching to a lower-nicotine vape instead of quitting. For some people, stepping down gradually works. For most, it simply prolongs the dependence without ending it. If you have been reducing for more than a month without making real progress, try a clean break.
Quitting without addressing the stress that drove the habit. If vaping was managing your stress, removing it without a replacement leaves you exposed. Exercise, structured relaxation, and regular dhikr are evidence-based stress management tools.
Telling yourself you only vape a little. Minimization is a common defence mechanism around any habit. Count your actual daily vaping sessions. Be honest with the number.
Common Questions
I vape but do not use nicotine vapes. Is that still a problem? Nicotine-free vapes still deliver ultrafine particles and chemicals into the lungs, and the research on their long-term effects is not reassuring. They also maintain the behavioural habit of reaching for something to inhale when stressed or bored. Many scholars include them in their rulings on vaping. The goal of breaking the habit applies equally.
My teenage child is vaping. How do I approach this? Lead with concern, not condemnation. Ask about the experience without immediately lecturing. Teenagers typically respond to being genuinely heard better than to rules being enforced. Then establish clear expectations and help them understand both the health reality and the Islamic principle.
How long until vaping cravings stop? The most intense cravings typically last one to three weeks. Psychological cravings โ triggered by situations associated with vaping โ can last months, but they become progressively weaker and easier to ignore. Many former vapers report the habit feeling distant by three months.
You Can Put It Down for Good
The vape does not belong in your deen or your lungs. You already know this. The only thing standing between you and a vape-free life is a series of specific, manageable decisions โ starting with throwing your device away today.
Make the niyyah. Set the date. Tell someone. Replace the triggers. Build your streak.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is vaping haram in Islam?
The majority of contemporary scholars consider vaping haram because it contains nicotine (an addictive, harmful substance) and other chemicals whose long-term effects are damaging. The Islamic principle of avoiding self-harm applies clearly.
Is vaping less harmful than smoking?
Vaping is generally considered less harmful than cigarettes, but 'less harmful' is not the same as safe. It still delivers nicotine addiction and has documented effects on lung health.
Can I use nicotine patches to quit vaping?
Yes. Nicotine replacement therapy is permissible in Islam as a medical aid to exit dependence. The goal is to step down from nicotine entirely.
What do I do with my vape when I decide to quit?
Throw it away today, along with spare pods and coils. Do not keep it 'just in case' โ having it available makes relapse far more likely.
I only vape socially. Is that still a problem?
Social vaping is how most habitual vaping starts. If you find yourself choosing social situations partly because vaping will be available, the habit already has more hold than you think.
