In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You know you should pray. You have known for a long time. Some part of you even wants to. But the gap between that knowledge and actually establishing all five prayers in your day has felt impossible to close โ and every failed attempt makes it harder to try again.
This is not a knowledge problem. It is a habit problem. And habits are built differently from intentions.
This guide is for the person who wants to rebuild the prayer habit โ not as a theological lecture, but as a practical step-by-step plan that actually works.
Why This Matters
Prayer is not a supplementary practice in Islam. It is the foundation:
ุงุนูููู ููุง ุฃูููู ุฎูููุฑู ุฃูุนูู ูุงููููู ู ุงูุตูููุงุฉู
"Know that the best of your deeds is prayer." โ (Ibn Majah 277)
The Prophet ๏ทบ described the prayer as the pillar of the deen:
"The prayer is the pillar of the religion. Whoever establishes it has established the religion. Whoever abandons it has destroyed the religion." โ (Bayhaqi, Shu'ab Al-Iman)
This is not meant to create guilt โ you are already dealing with that. It is meant to provide clarity: the prayer is not one habit among many. It is the structure around which all other religious and even personal discipline organises.
A person who prays consistently is a different person in every other area of their life. Not because of magic, but because five times a day you are practising the discipline of stopping what you are doing and answering a call. That practice shapes you.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1 โ Start With Tawbah and a Clean Start
If prayers have been missing for a long time, the accumulated weight of it can feel like a barrier to starting. The first step is to cut through that barrier with sincerity.
Pray two rakats of salat al-tawbah today. Speak to Allah directly:
ุฑูุจููููุง ุธูููู ูููุง ุฃููููุณูููุง ููุฅูู ูููู ู ุชูุบูููุฑู ููููุง ููุชูุฑูุญูู ูููุง ูููููููููููู ู ููู ุงููุฎูุงุณูุฑูููู
Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa illam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakunanna minal-khasirin
"Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers." โ (Surah Al-A'raf, 7:23)
This tawbah is the starting point. Now build forward from today.
Step 2 โ Start With One Prayer, Not Five
The all-or-nothing approach is one of the main reasons this effort fails. Many people try to go from zero prayers to five prayers simultaneously โ and when that proves unsustainable after two weeks, they return to zero.
A more effective approach: start with one prayer. Specifically, start with Fajr or Maghrib:
- Fajr: the most impactful, the most disciplined, and the anchor for everything else in the day
- Maghrib: the easiest to remember (it is at sunset, when activity naturally pauses) and often the easiest logistics-wise
Build one prayer into a consistent, daily, non-negotiable habit. After 2-3 weeks, add a second. After another 2-3 weeks, add a third. Build the full five prayers over 6-10 weeks rather than overnight.
Step 3 โ Set Prayer Alarms for Every Prayer
You have alarms for your wake-up time. For a meeting. For a medication. Add alarms for every prayer time.
Label them clearly: "Fajr prayer," "Dhuhr prayer," etc. Set the alarm for 5 minutes before the prayer time so you have a preparation window. When the alarm fires, that is the prayer time โ not a notification you process and then continue what you were doing.
Step 4 โ Know What to Do Logistically at Each Prayer Time
Many people miss prayers because the logistics feel unclear in the moment: where do I make wudu? Where do I pray? What if I am at work?
Before this week:
- Identify your wudu source at home, at work, and in common places you spend time
- Identify where you can pray at work โ a quiet meeting room, your car, an outdoor space
- Keep a prayer mat either at home and at work, or a compact one in your bag
- Know the qibla direction in all your common locations (app: Qibla Compass)
When the logistics are solved in advance, the actual prayer takes 5 minutes. The obstacles you encounter in the moment are usually logistical ones that could have been solved ahead of time.

Step 5 โ Use the Prayer as a Day-Structuring Tool
The five prayers are not interruptions to your day. They are the structure of your day.
Dhuhr marks midday. Asr marks the afternoon. Maghrib marks the close of the workday. Isha ends the night. Fajr opens the morning. When you pray all five on time, your day naturally has rhythm and anchors.
The mental shift from "fitting prayer into my schedule" to "building my schedule around prayer times" is significant. The second approach reduces missed prayers because the prayer is the structure, not something squeezed into it.
Step 6 โ Make Up Missed Prayers Systematically
If you have a debt of missed prayers, do not let the size of the debt prevent you from addressing it:
- Maintain the current five daily prayers first โ these are the priority
- After each obligatory prayer, add one qada prayer
- Work backward from the most recent missed prayers
- Be consistent rather than trying to pay off years of debt in a week
This approach is gradual and sustainable. The debt reduces over months of consistency.
Step 7 โ Build an Accountability Community
People who pray in congregation are significantly more consistent than people who pray alone. Even if you cannot always pray in congregation, having a friend or family member who knows your prayer goal and checks in with you weekly changes the dynamic.
Consider:
- Praying one prayer a day with a family member when possible
- A small group of friends who check in on each other's prayer
- The local masjid for Fajr and Isha if your schedule allows
Making It Stick โ The Habit Science
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are small." โ (Sahih Bukhari 6464)
This is precisely how habits form: through consistent, manageable actions over time. Starting with one prayer and building to five over two months is more likely to succeed than a dramatic overnight conversion that collapses after two weeks.
Track the habit. Visualise the streak. Let the streak become its own motivator.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Trying to go from zero to five prayers immediately. Build incrementally. One prayer established consistently is worth more than five attempted and abandoned.
Treating a missed prayer as "falling off" the effort. Make it up, continue with the next prayer, and keep going. One missed prayer is not a failure โ it is a data point about what needs adjustment.
Ignoring the logistics. If you do not have a solution for the work prayer, for the travel prayer, for the prayer in unfamiliar places โ you will keep missing those prayers. Solve the logistics before they become obstacles.
Making it entirely private. Accountability with one trusted person dramatically increases consistency. Pray together with a family member when you can.
Common Questions
What if I do not know how to pray correctly? Learning the prayer is itself the first step. The basic structure โ niyyah, standing, ruku, sujud, tashahhud โ can be learned from a 20-minute video or a basic fiqh resource. You do not need to know every ruling to start praying. Start with the basic form and build from there.
Can I combine prayers if I miss one? Combining prayers (jam') is permitted in specific circumstances โ travel, illness, rain. It is not a general solution for a busy schedule. The goal is to build the five prayer habit; combining prayers regularly is managing the symptom rather than building the habit.
What if my family does not pray and the environment does not support it? This is a real challenge. You are building a counter-cultural habit in your own home. Use your phone alarms, create a quiet prayer space in your room, and find at least one community or friend outside your home who shares the goal. See how to break bad habits as a Muslim for more on building habits in unsupportive environments.
I know the importance but I still do not feel motivated. What helps? Motivation follows action, not the other way around. Do not wait to feel motivated to pray. Pray, and notice how you feel afterward. Consistently doing the action builds the emotional connection to it. See dua for self-control for duas to use when the motivation is low.
Closing โ Start With the Next Prayer
You do not need to solve the entire history today. You need to pray the next prayer that comes.
Whatever time it is as you read this, there is a prayer coming soon. Look it up. Make wudu. Pray it. And then the one after that.
One prayer at a time, one day at a time. That is how this habit is built.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is missing prayers regularly a major sin in Islam?
Yes. Intentionally abandoning the five daily prayers is among the most serious matters in Islam. Missing a prayer occasionally due to genuine oversight is different from habitually abandoning them. The goal is to build the habit that makes missing prayers the exception, not the norm.
Should I try to make up all the prayers I have missed over the years?
Scholars differ on this. The majority position is that you should make up prayers you have missed deliberately over your lifetime, known as qada. Begin with sincere tawbah, then gradually make up the debt while maintaining the current five daily prayers. Do not let the accumulation feel overwhelming โ start today and build from there.
What is the best starting strategy if I currently pray zero prayers?
Start with one prayer โ whichever feels most achievable. Many scholars advise starting with Fajr (most disciplined but most impactful) or Maghrib (easiest to remember because it is sunset). Build one prayer into a consistent daily habit before adding the next.
How do I pray at work when there is no designated prayer space?
Speak to HR or your manager about a quiet space for 10 minutes twice during the working day. Most workplaces have an office, a meeting room, or even an outdoor space that works. Many Muslims have done this successfully. Alternatively, pray in your car if one is available.
I have been away from prayers for years. Where do I begin?
Begin with two rakats of tawbah prayer right now. Then pray the next obligatory prayer when its time comes. You are not starting from a completed life โ you are starting from today. The slate does not need to be clean to start.
