In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Most Muslims who struggle with this habit carry it entirely alone. The shame prevents them from telling anyone. The privacy of the habit prevents natural accountability. And so it runs โ sometimes for years โ while the person keeps praying for strength and wondering why the strength is not arriving.
The strength is not the problem. The structure is.
Willpower has a daily budget. It runs out. The habit knows this. It waits for the moments when you are tired, alone, bored, or stressed โ and then it runs. Breaking it requires changing the conditions in which it runs, not just strengthening the resolve that gets worn down every day.
Why This Matters
The Quran places the protection of private parts among the defining qualities of the believer:
ููุงูููุฐูููู ููู ู ููููุฑููุฌูููู ู ุญูุงููุธูููู
"And those who guard their private parts." โ (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:5)
The majority of Islamic scholars โ across the four madhabs โ hold that masturbation is impermissible. The reason points back to the spiritual damage of surrendering to the nafs in private: the habit of yielding in private trains the nafs to expect yielding in other areas too.
The Prophet ๏ทบ addressed the upstream cause:
"Do not be alone with a woman, and do not gaze upon what is prohibited." โ (Tirmidhi 1171)
Pornography โ a major driver of masturbation in the modern context โ is unambiguously the zina of the eyes. Most people who struggle with masturbation find that pornography is part of the loop. Addressing both together is more effective than addressing either alone.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1 โ Make a Real Tawbah Today
Before anything structural, begin with the internal:
Perform ghusl, make wudu, and pray two rakats of salat al-tawbah. Speak to Allah honestly. Name the habit. Ask for forgiveness and for help to build the structure that your intention alone has not been able to sustain.
ุงููููููู ูู ุฅููููู ุฃูุนููุฐู ุจููู ู ููู ุดูุฑูู ููููุณูู ููู ููู ุดูุฑูู ุงูุดููููุทูุงูู ููุดูุฑููููู
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri nafsi wa min sharri Shaytan wa shirkih
"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own soul and from the evil of Shaytan and his partners." โ (Abu Dawud 5067)
This is not the last step. It is the first. The structural steps that follow give this tawbah something to hold onto.
Step 2 โ Secure the Environment Immediately
The habit has a habitat: usually a bedroom, usually late at night, usually with a phone or laptop that has no content filtering. Change the habitat.
- Install content filtering: NextDNS or CleanBrowsing on DNS level (covers all devices on your network), plus Screen Time on iOS or Digital Wellbeing on Android with a PIN held by someone you trust
- Charge your phone outside your bedroom: this single change is among the most effective interventions. No phone in the bedroom at night.
- Move your computer out of your bedroom: or set it up with your desk facing a window or open door
- Remove any stored material: delete anything from your devices that has been part of the habit loop
Do not skip this step because it feels extreme. The extremity is the point.
Step 3 โ Tell One Trusted Person
You do not need to tell everyone. You need to tell one person:
- Someone you respect and who will not judge you harshly
- Someone who will check in with you weekly
- Someone who will hold your content filter PIN if possible
The privacy of this habit is its greatest protection. Accountability changes the dynamic fundamentally. Many people find that just knowing someone is checking in is enough to change the moment of temptation.
Step 4 โ Identify Your Trigger Situations
The habit does not occur randomly. It occurs in specific conditions โ times of day, emotional states, environmental setups. For most people, the pattern includes:
- Late at night, alone in bed
- Bored during idle afternoon or evening time
- After watching triggering content online
- During emotional lows: stress, loneliness, rejection
Write your specific triggers down. For each trigger, plan an alternative response:
- Late at night in bed โ phone is already outside the room; recite Ayat Al-Kursi and sleep
- Afternoon boredom โ exercise, text a friend, go for a walk
- After triggering content โ the content filtering should have prevented this; if not, identify the gap and close it

Step 5 โ Fast on Mondays and Thursdays
The Prophet ๏ทบ prescribed fasting specifically for those struggling with desire:
"O young men, whoever among you can afford to marry, let him marry... whoever cannot, let him fast, for it is a shield for him." โ (Sahih Bukhari 5065)
Fasting reduces the physical intensity of sexual drive and builds the self-discipline muscle. This is not a cure โ it is a support tool. Used consistently alongside the structural changes, it makes the clean days easier to maintain.
Step 6 โ Build Fajr as Your Daily Anchor
The most consistent predictor of maintaining a clean streak in this area is Fajr prayer on time. When you get up for Fajr, you start the day from a place of worship and discipline. When you miss Fajr, the day starts in a weaker state.
Make Fajr non-negotiable. Set multiple alarms. Ask someone to wake you if needed. The discipline of Fajr is not separate from the discipline of this habit โ they are the same muscle.
Step 7 โ Track Your Streaks
The brain responds to visible progress. When you see that you have built a 12-day streak and a relapse would reset it to zero, the decision in the moment of temptation becomes different. The streak itself becomes a motivator.
Track your clean days. Even a paper note or a phone memo. After 30 days, the habit is losing its automatic quality. After 60 days, you are building a new normal. After 90 days, most people report that the intensity of the urge has significantly decreased.
Making It Stick โ The Habit Science
Habits run on cues, routines, and rewards. The cue for this habit is usually the combination of: private space + accessible device + idle time. The routine is the act. The reward is the dopamine response.
You cannot eliminate the reward โ it is biological. You can remove the cue. No private device in the bedroom at night removes the most common cue. Environmental design beats willpower every time, because the environment is always there even when willpower is depleted.
This is not a character weakness. This is how habits work. Change the environment and you change the outcome.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Relying on good intentions without environmental change. The intention is necessary but not sufficient. The environment has to change. If the phone is still in your bedroom at night and there is no content filtering, you are relying entirely on willpower in the worst conditions.
Treating each relapse as a catastrophe. Relapse during recovery is common. The response to it matters more than the relapse itself. Make tawbah, identify the gap, fix it, and continue. Do not abandon the effort because it was not perfect.
Trying to manage this completely alone. The privacy of the habit is its protection. One accountability partner changes the dynamic significantly. The investment in that conversation is worth it.
Quitting after a good week. The habit is an old, established pattern. After one good week, it is not gone. Continue the structural changes for at least 90 days. The habit is dismantled over months, not weeks.
Common Questions
What if the habit is combined with pornography? Address both simultaneously. The pornography is often the trigger that the masturbation habit is built around. Removing pornography access through content filtering is step 2 above for that reason. Also see how to break the habit of gooning in Islam for specific guidance on pornography addiction.
Does marriage fix this? Marriage provides a halal alternative and removes the "no outlet" dimension. But the habit itself โ the conditioned response to private time and stress โ does not automatically disappear. Building the environmental and structural changes now creates a foundation that will also strengthen the marriage.
I have tried many times and always relapsed. Is this hopeless? No. Long-standing habits take longer to dismantle. But previous attempts that ended in relapse were not failures โ they were practice runs that taught you what does not work. Typically, the missing element is environmental change and accountability rather than more willpower.

Closing โ Build the Environment, Not Just the Will
You already have the will. You have had it many times. What you need is the structure around the will โ the phone out of the bedroom, the content filter installed, the accountability partner named, the Fajr alarm set.
Do those things today. Not tomorrow. Today.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is masturbation haram in Islam?
The majority scholarly position is that masturbation is impermissible. The minority view permits it in extreme circumstances. What is agreed on is that for most Muslims, it is something to work toward eliminating โ particularly when it involves pornography, which is clearly prohibited.
Why is this habit so hard to break compared to others?
Because it is private, immediately available, and carries no external social accountability. Most habits have natural friction โ other people, cost, effort. This one has almost none. Breaking it requires building the internal and environmental structure that other habits get from the outside.
Does relapsing mean I have failed?
No. Relapse is part of the process for most people. The goal is not a perfect first attempt โ it is building longer and longer streaks until the habit is no longer controlling you. Make tawbah after each relapse, identify what environmental condition failed, and fix that gap.
What is the most important first step?
Remove the conditions under which the habit happens โ usually private time alone with an unsecured device. Install content filtering, charge your phone outside the bedroom, and establish an accountability partner. The environment comes first.
Is there a dua specifically for this?
You can use the general dua for resisting nafs: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri nafsi wa min sharri Shaytan.' The specific dua for tawbah after sin is also important โ say it sincerely each time you fall and each time you rise.
