In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

If you're reading this, you already know something is wrong. You may not have even named it clearly โ it's one of those habits that lives in the grey zone, hidden from everyone, hard to confess even to yourself. You keep it "controlled." You tell yourself you're not doing the full thing. And yet somehow you feel the same shame, the same spiritual distance from Allah, the same cycle of tawbah and relapse.
That cycle is real, and it's not a sign of weak faith. It's a sign that the habit has roots your current strategy isn't reaching.
Why This Habit Is Hard to See Clearly
Edging โ deliberately bringing yourself to the edge of sexual release through fantasy, haram content, or physical stimulation without completion โ sits in a grey zone that the nafs loves. It tells you: "I stopped before the line." But the line was crossed much earlier: in the gaze, in the fantasy, in the intention.
The Prophet ๏ทบ warned about the zinaa of the eyes and the zinaa of the heart:
"The eyes commit zinaa, and their zinaa is looking. The tongue commits zinaa, and its zinaa is speaking..." โ (Sahih Bukhari 6243)
The action that happens at the end of edging is the last step in a chain that began much earlier. Breaking the habit means identifying and cutting the chain at its beginning, not managing the last moment of it.
Why It Is So Hard to Stop
The habit creates a dopamine loop that the body learns to anticipate. The brain gets the hit of anticipation and arousal, which can be as powerful as completion. And because edging often doesn't end in completion โ at first โ it feels "controlled." The nafs frames it as discipline.
Over time, the habit escalates. What was "just looking" becomes more deliberate stimulation. The threshold for satisfaction keeps rising. And the shame keeps compounding, making honest self-assessment harder.
Your nafs will tell you:
- "It's not as bad as actual masturbation."
- "I didn't finish, so it's fine."
- "Everyone struggles with this โ it's not a big deal."
Recognize these thoughts for what they are: your lower self defending its supply.
Step-by-Step: How to Break the Habit of Edging in Islam
Step 1 โ Call It What It Is
Stop euphemizing. You are deliberately seeking sexual arousal outside of marriage. That is what you are dealing with. Naming it clearly, at least to yourself, removes the grey zone that the nafs hides in.
Step 2 โ Make a Firm Tawbah Now โ Then Build a System
Tawbah is essential, but it is the beginning of the work, not the work itself. Pray two rakats, make sincere dua, feel genuine regret, resolve to stop โ and then immediately start building the structure below.

Astaghfirullahil-'adheem alladhi la ilaha illa huwal-Hayyul-Qayyoumu wa atubu ilayh
"I seek forgiveness of Allah the Magnificent, there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, and I repent to Him." โ (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)
Step 3 โ Map Your Trigger Chain
Edging does not begin with the act itself. It begins 30-60 minutes earlier with a trigger: boredom, loneliness, late-night phone use, certain content, certain environments. List your specific trigger chain:
- Time of day it usually happens
- What device or context
- What emotional state precedes it
- What content or thought starts the loop
You cannot interrupt a habit you cannot see.
Step 4 โ Cut the Chain at the Earliest Point
The earlier you interrupt the chain, the easier it is. It is nearly impossible to stop at the last moment. It is completely possible to not pick up your phone alone in bed at night. Address the trigger, not the endpoint.
Practical blocks:
- Phone in another room at bedtime
- No internet browsing alone at night
- Internet filter on all devices (Covenant Eyes, or similar)
- No social media accounts that expose you to triggering content
Step 5 โ Fast Regularly
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"O young men, whoever of you can afford marriage, let him marry. Whoever cannot, let him fast โ for fasting is a shield." โ (Sahih Bukhari 5065)
Fasting is not just about hunger. It is a full-body training in sabr โ the ability to delay gratification. Fast Mondays and Thursdays, or the white days. You will notice the cravings reduce significantly within two weeks of consistent fasting.

Step 6 โ Fill the Void With a Physical Outlet
Sexual tension that is not discharged finds another outlet. Make sure you have one: regular physical exercise (even a 20-minute walk), cold showers when the urge is strong, and active engagement with your body outside of sedentary alone-time. Exercise is not a distraction โ it is a physiological reset.
Step 7 โ Build Morning and Night Routines That Protect You
Most of these habits happen in two windows: morning isolation and late-night isolation. Build a structured routine for both:
- Morning: wake-up dua, Fajr salah, 5-10 minutes Quran before touching your phone
- Night: Ayatul Kursi + last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah before sleep, phone charging outside the bedroom
Structure at the boundaries of the day closes the windows where the habit lives.
Making It Stick โ The Habit Science
Your brain will not un-wire the edging habit passively. It requires building a competing habit that is strong enough to redirect the neural pathway. Dhikr, fasting, exercise, and structured routines all create competing grooves. Over 40-60 days of consistency, the pull of the old habit weakens and the new pathways strengthen.
Track your clean days. See Dua for Self-Control for specific duas to say when the urge hits.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Treating tawbah as the full solution. Tawbah cleans the sin. It does not remove the trigger. You need both.
2. Waiting until the urge is full-strength to try to stop. At that point, you are already deep in the trigger chain. Interrupt it earlier.
3. Isolating in shame after a slip. Shame keeps you stuck. Make tawbah and move forward the same day.
4. Having no accountability. You don't need to confess the details โ but telling one trusted person "I'm working on something" and checking in weekly changes the dynamic.
Common Questions
Is this the same as masturbation in Islamic law? Scholars treat them differently in terms of exact rulings, but both involve the deliberate seeking of sexual arousal outside of marriage, which is impermissible. The practical advice for breaking both habits is identical.
What if I keep failing even with all this? Then the roots are deeper โ possibly an addiction pattern โ and you need structured support: a trusted sheikh, an Islamic counsellor, or a recovery group. Seeking help is not weakness; it is a sunnah of asking the people of knowledge.
Does edging invalidate my fast? Masturbating during a fast invalidates it and requires making it up (qada). Edging that results in ejaculation has the same ruling. Edging that releases madhiy but not full ejaculation does not invalidate the fast, but is still impermissible and requires sincere tawbah.
Closing โ The Freedom You're Searching for Is Real
The habit keeps you chained to a cycle of shame and distance from Allah. Breaking it โ fully, structurally, not just through willpower โ is one of the most liberating things you will do for your relationship with Allah and with yourself.
You are not broken. You are in a battle. And Allah is with those who strive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is edging haram in Islam?
Deliberately arousing yourself without release, especially through haram content or fantasies, is considered impermissible by most scholars. It involves gazing at what is forbidden and intentionally stimulating desire outside of marriage.
Does edging require ghusl?
If pre-seminal fluid (madhiy) is released, wudu is broken and the garment requires washing, but ghusl is not obligatory. If full ejaculation occurs, ghusl is required.
How do I make tawbah for edging?
Stop immediately, make sincere tawbah โ regret, stop the action, resolve not to return โ pray two rakats of salatul tawbah, and move forward. Do not spiral in shame.
Why do I keep going back even after tawbah?
Because the habit is wired into specific triggers (boredom, late nights, certain content) that tawbah alone does not remove. You need to address the triggers, not just the action.
What is the best Islamic tool for breaking sexual habit cycles?
Fasting is the Prophet's prescription: 'Whoever is able to marry, let him do so. Whoever is not, let him fast โ for fasting is a shield.' It reduces biological drive and trains self-denial.
