In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There is a question that seems simple but opens into something significant: how many times should I say Astaghfirullah?
The answer from the Sunnah is clear. But more interesting than the number is what the Prophet ๏ทบ said alongside it โ and what it reveals about how seriously he took his own need for Allah's forgiveness, despite being a prophet with no major sins.
The Numbers From the Sunnah
The Prophet ๏ทบ gave us specific counts:
ุฅููููู ููุฃูุณูุชูุบูููุฑู ุงูููููู ููุฃูุชููุจู ุฅููููููู ููู ุงููููููู ู ุฃูููุซูุฑู ู ููู ุณูุจูุนูููู ู ูุฑููุฉู
Inni la-astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayhi fi al-yawmi akthara min sab'eena marra
"Indeed, I seek the forgiveness of Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day." โ (Sahih Bukhari 6307)
In another narration:
"O people! Repent to Allah, for I seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him a hundred times a day." โ (Sahih Muslim 2702)
So the target range is 70 to 100 times per day โ not as an occasional practice but as a daily minimum.
And it bears repeating: this was said by the Prophet ๏ทบ himself. The man whose past and future sins were already forgiven (Quran 48:2) still sought forgiveness over a hundred times a day. If he felt this level of need for istighfar, what does that say about our own need?
What Astaghfirullah Means
Astaghfirullah (ุฃูุณูุชูุบูููุฑู ุงูููููู) breaks down into:
- Astaghfiru โ "I seek / I ask for"
- Allah โ Allah, the One God
Literally: "I seek Allah's forgiveness."
The word ghafara (forgive) in Arabic carries the image of covering โ like a helmet that covers and protects the head. When Allah forgives, He covers the sin, conceals it, and removes its weight from you. Astaghfirullah is asking for exactly that covering.
The Prophet described the effect of this practice directly:
"Whoever says astaghfirullah regularly, Allah will provide for him a way out of every difficulty, relief from every anxiety, and provision from where he does not expect." โ (Abu Dawud 1518)
This is not spiritual metaphor. It is a direct prophetic promise: consistent istighfar opens doors, removes burdens, and brings rizq from unexpected sources.
The Best Times to Say Astaghfirullah
While the 70-100 count can be spread across the day, the Sunnah identifies specific moments when istighfar is especially recommended.
After each salah โ 3 times: After the Prophet would finish his prayer and say the salaam, he would say Astaghfirullah three times before making any other dhikr. (Sahih Muslim 591). This is one of the most consistently established prophetic practices and takes less than ten seconds after each prayer.
At the end of the night โ before Fajr: Allah describes the people of taqwa in the Quran: "And in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness." (Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 51:18). The pre-Fajr period is specifically associated with accepted istighfar โ the time when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and asks who is seeking forgiveness.
After completing any act of worship: The Quran records that the pilgrims were commanded to seek forgiveness after completing the rites of Hajj: "Then depart from where all the people depart, and ask forgiveness of Allah." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:199). The pattern is clear: after completing worship, seek forgiveness for any shortcoming in that worship.
After sins โ immediately: The Prophet said: "Whoever commits a sin and then makes wudu, prays two raka'at, and seeks forgiveness, Allah will forgive him." (Abu Dawud 1521). The response to a specific sin is specific, immediate istighfar.
In the morning and evening adhkar: Sayyid al-Istighfar โ the master supplication for forgiveness โ is recommended once in the morning and once in the evening as part of the regular adhkar. This is a longer dua, distinct from the repeated Astaghfirullah.
Why Your Nafs Resists Istighfar
Here is something worth naming honestly: many Muslims find consistent istighfar difficult not because of time, but because of a subtle resistance.
Saying Astaghfirullah regularly means regularly acknowledging that you are a person who needs forgiveness. The nafs resists this. It prefers a self-image that does not need constant repair. It would rather think of itself as broadly fine, with maybe a few areas to work on.
But the Islamic self-understanding is different. The Prophet ๏ทบ โ again, the most spiritually elevated human being who ever lived โ did this more than 100 times a day. Not because he was a bad person, but because the awareness of dependency on Allah, and the acknowledgment of human limitation, is itself a form of ibadah.
Regular istighfar is not self-punishment. It is the accurate posture of a servant before their Lord โ one who knows they are not perfect, who does not pretend otherwise, and who turns to Allah's mercy rather than their own righteousness.
That posture is what the nafs fights against. And that is exactly why the practice is worth fighting for.

How to Build the 70-100 Times Daily Habit
Reaching 70-100 times a day sounds like a lot until you do the math: across five daily prayers and the spaces between them, it requires about fifteen _Astaghfirullah_s per prayer slot.
Here is a practical system:
After each salah: 3 times minimum. This is the established Sunnah. Five prayers x 3 repetitions = 15. That is your guaranteed baseline each day.
On the tasbih after salah: extend your dhikr. After Subhanallah (33x), Alhamdulillah (33x), Allahu Akbar (33x), add Astaghfirullah (33x) before the closing dua. That brings your post-prayer count to 18, and your daily post-salah count to 90. You have hit 70-100 through salah alone.
Use idle moments. Driving, walking, waiting โ these are the gaps the Prophet filled with dhikr. A commute of ten minutes is easily 50 repetitions of Astaghfirullah at a natural pace.
Morning adhkar โ include Sayyid al-Istighfar. The master supplication in the morning and evening bookends your day with the most comprehensive form of istighfar.
Before sleeping. Say Astaghfirullah as part of your pre-sleep practice. Seeking forgiveness for the day's shortcomings before you close your eyes is both practically powerful and spiritually sound.
Signs That This Practice Is Working
You will know the habit is taking root when:
The word comes automatically in moments of anxiety or spiritual discomfort โ not as a mental effort but as a reflex.
You start noticing unexpected ease in difficult situations. This is the prophetic promise in action: "Allah will make for him a way out of every distress."
You feel less defensive about your sins and more comfortable bringing them to Allah. This is the softening of the heart that consistent istighfar produces.

Common Questions
Does saying Astaghfirullah while distracted still count? Presence of mind (khushu') increases the quality and sincerity of any dhikr. But absent-minded recitation still carries reward, according to scholarly consensus. The goal is to increase the percentage of mindful repetitions over time, not to wait for perfect focus before beginning.
Can I count on my fingers instead of a tasbih? Yes. The Prophet ๏ทบ used to count on his fingers, calling this practice a speaking tasbih โ that will be asked about. (Abu Dawud 1502). Counting on fingers, tasbih beads, or a digital counter are all valid tools.
Is there a specific dua to say when reaching 70 or 100? No specific dua at the milestone is narrated. Simply continue the practice throughout the day rather than doing it all at once and then stopping.
Can I say Astaghfirullah loudly or does it need to be silent? Both are valid. The Prophet sometimes taught dhikr verbally and at other times described internal states. Saying it audibly can help with focus and makes the practice more physical and present. Silent recitation is also valid and appropriate in contexts where speaking aloud would be awkward.
The Prophet's Practice as Our Standard
One hundred times a day. From the man who needed it least by any human measure.
The lesson is not that the Prophet was afraid of hellfire or uncertain of his status. The lesson is that acknowledgment of Allah's greatness and our own limitation is itself an act of ibadah โ a form of worship independent of whether we have major things to repent from.
Astaghfirullah is not only for the heavy sinners. It is for every believer who recognizes the gap between what Allah deserves and what they have been able to give โ and who turns to His mercy rather than their own performance.
Start with 70 today. The Prophet reached 100.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many times should you say Astaghfirullah?
The Prophet Muhammad said astaghfirullah at least 70 times daily according to one hadith (Bukhari 6307), and 100 times per day in another narration (Muslim 2702). The target is 70-100 times as a daily minimum, with additional istighfar after sins, after salah, and in other recommended moments.
Is there a specific time to say Astaghfirullah?
Astaghfirullah is specifically recommended after salah (3 times, Sahih Muslim 591), during the last part of the night (as the people of taqwa in Quran 51:18 did), after completing any ibadah, and continuously throughout the day as the Prophet's personal practice.
Does saying Astaghfirullah forgive sins?
Yes. The Prophet said: 'Whoever says astaghfirullah regularly, Allah will make for him a way out of every distress, and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide for him from where he does not expect.' (Abu Dawud 1518). Regular istighfar is one of the most powerful means of forgiveness and blessing.
Can I say Astaghfirullah in Arabic if I do not understand it?
Yes. Saying the Arabic words is valid and carries reward even without understanding. However, learning the meaning โ 'I ask Allah for forgiveness' โ deepens your engagement and sincerity. Both reciting in Arabic (which is the sunnah) and understanding the meaning are important.
What is the difference between Astaghfirullah and Sayyid al-Istighfar?
Astaghfirullah is the short form: 'I ask Allah for forgiveness.' Sayyid al-Istighfar is the master supplication for forgiveness โ a longer, more comprehensive dua the Prophet called the best way to seek forgiveness. Both are authentic and recommended; Sayyid al-Istighfar is typically said once in the morning and evening, while astaghfirullah is said repeatedly throughout the day.
