Friday Sunnah Acts: How to Make the Most of Jummah

You show up for Jummah. You hear the khutbah. You pray. Then you leave and the rest of Friday looks exactly like any other weekday.

If that is your entire Friday, you are accessing maybe twenty percent of what this day offers.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"The best day the sun rises over is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise, and on it he was expelled from it. And the Hour will not come except on a Friday." — (Sahih Muslim 854)

The most important day of the week. And most of us treat it like a Tuesday with a khutbah attached.

Here is what Friday actually looks like when you follow the Sunnah.

Before Jummah

Ghusl on Friday

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Bathing on Friday is obligatory upon every adult Muslim." (Sahih Al-Bukhari 858). Scholars differ on whether this means wajib (obligatory) or Sunnah Muakkadah, but the strength of the command is clear. A Friday ghusl before going for Jummah is the Sunnah, full stop.

This is not just about physical cleanliness. It is about beginning the day in a state of renewed purity — entering the best day of the week intentionally, not accidentally.

Wearing Your Best Clothes

The Prophet used to wear a particular garment specifically for Jummah and the two Eids. This is not about wealth — it is about marking the day as special through your physical presentation. Wear your cleanest clothes. Make an effort.

Using Perfume (itr)

Applying permitted perfume (non-alcoholic) on Friday is Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ said the angels stand at the doors of the masjid on Friday and record those who come first. Coming purified, clean, and wearing itr reflects your respect for the gathering.

Going Early to the Masjid

"On Friday the angels stand at every door of the mosque and record the people in order of their arrival. The first is like one who offered a camel in sacrifice, the next like one who offered a cow, then a ram, then a chicken, then an egg." — (Sahih Al-Bukhari 929)

The earlier you arrive, the greater the reward. Going early also means you arrive with a calm heart rather than rushing in during the khutbah. Use the waiting time for dhikr, reciting Surah Al-Kahf, and sending salawat on the Prophet.

During Jummah

Reciting Surah Al-Kahf

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever reads Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will have a light shining for them between two Fridays. You can read it anytime from Thursday sunset to Friday sunset — before the prayer, after Asr, whenever it fits. What matters is consistency. Sending Salawat on the Prophet

"Increase your prayers upon me on Friday, for your prayers are presented to me." — (Abu Dawud 1047)

The Prophet ﷺ receives our salawat and responds to them. On Friday, he specifically asked us to increase this practice. Sending salawat — even silently — while waiting for the khutbah is one of the most valuable uses of that time.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin wa ala ali Muhammad

"O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad."

Listening Attentively to the Khutbah

The Prophet said that if you even touch the pebbles in front of you during the khutbah, you have engaged in laghw (frivolous acts) and your Jummah is diminished. This means no phone, no side conversations, no zoning out. Listen as if it is a message from your Lord — because in meaning, it is.

After Jummah

Making Dua in the Last Hour Before Maghrib

The Prophet ﷺ described Friday as having a special hour when dua is accepted:

"On Friday there is a time when, if a Muslim makes dua while standing in prayer, Allah will grant him his request." — (Sahih Al-Bukhari 935)

The most commonly accepted scholarly opinion places this hour in the period after Asr prayer until Maghrib. Fill this time with sincere, specific dua. This is not the time for generic requests — bring your real needs, your real worries, your real hopes.

Voluntary Sunnah Prayers

After Jummah, the Prophet ﷺ prayed two or four rakats of voluntary prayer. This seals the Jummah prayer and multiplies the reward of the day's worship.

Dhikr After Jummah

After the congregational prayer, remain seated for the post-prayer adhkar. On Friday specifically, the Prophet ﷺ would say certain athkar after the prayer. See our guide to dua after Jummah prayer for the specific wording.

Why These Acts Matter Beyond Friday

The Friday Sunnah practices are not arbitrary rituals. They are a structured reset for the week. When you begin Friday with ghusl and intention, sit attentively for the khutbah, fill the afternoon with salawat and dua, and close with recitation of Surah Al-Kahf — you end the day changed.

The nafs accumulates weight through the week — distractions, minor sins, spiritual forgetfulness. Friday, done properly, clears much of that and gives you a renewed starting point for the next week.

Common Questions

Can I read Surah Al-Kahf on Thursday night instead? Yes — the time window begins at Thursday sunset (which Islamic days count as the start of Friday) and extends through Friday sunset. Thursday night after Maghrib is valid.

What if I cannot go early to the masjid due to work? Do what you can. Early arrival is Sunnah, not obligatory. The Friday prayer itself remains the priority. If work prevents early arrival, maintain the other practices: ghusl, clean clothes, salawat, dua in the last hour.

Is it sunnah to fast on Friday specifically? The Prophet ﷺ prohibited singling out Friday for fasting without also fasting the day before or after (Sahih Al-Bukhari 1985). Friday is a day of celebration, not additional fasting alone.
