Durood Ibrahim Meaning: The Salawat You Say in Every Prayer

You say it multiple times every day — in the sitting position of your prayers, before making dua. But do you know what you are actually saying?

Durood Ibrahim is not just a recitation. It is a direct link, taught by the Prophet ﷺ himself, between you and the mercy that Allah poured on one of His greatest servants.

The Full Text of Durood Ibrahim

The complete Durood Ibrahim, as narrated in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim:

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin kama barakta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid.

"O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah, bestow Your grace upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You bestowed Your grace upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious." — (Sahih Bukhari 3370)

The Story Behind It: How This Durood Was Revealed

The Companions did not guess this formula. They asked for it.

Ka'b ibn 'Ujra (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

"We asked, 'O Messenger of Allah, we know how to greet you (with salam in prayer), but how do we send blessings upon you?' He said: 'Say: Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad...'" — (Sahih Bukhari 3370)

This is important. The Companions had been ordered in the Quran to send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ (33:56), but they did not know the proper form. They asked, and the Prophet gave them this exact formula. Every word is from prophetic instruction, not human composition.

This also tells us something about the nature of sincere asking. The Companions wanted to do it right, so they asked. That spirit — wanting to worship correctly, not just habitually — is what transforms recitation into real connection.

Breaking Down the Words

Salli vs. Barik

The Durood contains two parallel requests, each using a different Arabic verb:

صَلِّ (salli): From salah, which in the context of Allah means mercy, praise, and elevation of rank. "Send Your salah" means "raise his status, mention him in the highest assembly, send mercy upon him."

بَارِكْ (barik): From barakah — blessing, abundance, and ongoing good. "Bestow Your grace" means "make the blessings upon him lasting and abundant."

Together, they ask for both the honour of rank (salli) and the ongoing good (barik). Neither one alone captures the full request.

Hamid and Majid

The Durood closes with two Names of Allah:

حَمِيدٌ (Hamid): The Praiseworthy. Allah is inherently deserving of all praise. Invoking this Name after asking for the Prophet's honour is fitting — we are asking the One who is the source of all praiseworthy qualities to bestow honour on the most praised human being.

مَجِيدٌ (Majid): The Glorious. From majd, meaning glory and majesty. Allah's glory is the backdrop against which the honour of the Prophet becomes meaningful.

Why Ibrahim?

The comparison to Ibrahim is not arbitrary. Ibrahim is called Khalilullah — the close friend of Allah (4:125). He is the father of prophets, a man who submitted to Allah through the most severe tests without wavering. His family received the greatest divine blessings ever given to a line of human beings — the Quran, prophethood, and the covenant of leadership.

When Muslims say "as You blessed Ibrahim," they are asking Allah to give the Prophet Muhammad the same category of divine honour — which is the highest possible. The Prophet ﷺ himself confirmed that Ibrahim is the most honoured of all the prophets in certain respects (while the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ holds the highest station overall on the Day of Judgment as the one granted al-maqam al-mahmud).

Why You Should Say Durood Ibrahim Beyond Prayer

The Quran commands it:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا

Inna Allaha wa mala'ikatahu yusalluna 'alan-Nabi. Ya ayyuhal-ladhina amanu sallu 'alayhi wa sallimu taslima.

"Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with proper salutation." — (Quran 33:56)

And the reward is clear:

"Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah sends ten blessings upon him, ten sins are erased from him, and he is raised ten degrees in rank." — (Sahih Muslim 408)

This is one of the easiest acts of worship with one of the highest returns. A single Durood Ibrahim — said properly, with presence — earns ten blessings from Allah Himself.

The Prophet also said:

"The most miserly person is the one in whose presence I am mentioned and he does not send blessings upon me." — (Tirmidhi 3546)

Practical Ways to Say Durood More Often

• After every adhan: The Sunnah is to say durood after the call to prayer before making dua

The Connection to Durood Shareef

"Durood Shareef" is a generic term for any salawat (blessing) on the Prophet. Durood Ibrahim is the most authenticated and specific form, taught directly by the Prophet ﷺ. Common Questions

Is there a short version of Durood Ibrahim I can say?

The Quran permits simply saying Sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam (Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) — the common phrase used after the Prophet's name. However, for the tashahhud in prayer, the full Durood Ibrahim or a similar complete form is recommended.

Why does Durood Ibrahim mention the "family" of Muhammad and Ibrahim?

Aal (family) in Arabic can mean direct descendants, or more broadly, followers and those connected to someone in rank and purpose. Scholars differ on the exact scope here, but the consensus is that it includes at minimum the Prophet's wives and descendants (especially the Ahl al-Bayt — his household mentioned in Quran 33:33).

Can I say Durood Ibrahim in English?

Your salah must be in Arabic, including the Durood. For voluntary durood outside of prayer, you can say it in any language, though saying it in Arabic is considered more complete and carries the original meanings intended.

Does sending durood on the Prophet reach him?

Yes. Authentic hadith confirm that salawat sent by believers is conveyed to the Prophet ﷺ. He is informed of it in the grave. This is why it is especially moving to send durood after visiting or even thinking of him.
