In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Most people end their Quran session the same way they end a book. They reach a stopping point, close it, and move on. The recitation ends and the moment dissolves into whatever comes next โ€” a phone check, a conversation, a meal.

But the Quran is not a book you finish. It is a word from Allah that you visit, and when you leave, how you leave matters. The dua after reading Quran is not a ritual afterthought โ€” it is the seal that holds what you received, and the bridge that carries its effect into the rest of your day.

The Dua

The most established supplication after any session involving the remembrance of Allah โ€” including Quran recitation โ€” is called the kaffaratul majlis (expiation of the gathering). The Prophet (peace be upon him) would say it after any sitting in which Allah was remembered:

"Glory be to You, O Allah, and in Your praise. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You." โ€” (Sunan Abu Dawud 4857, Tirmidhi 3433)

When to say it: At the end of every Quran session โ€” whether you read one page or one juz. It acknowledges Allah's perfection, affirms His oneness, and humbly admits that however sincerely you recited, you fell short of the honor the Quran deserves.

After completing a full khatm, also say:

ุตูŽุฏูŽู‚ูŽ ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ุงู„ู’ุนูŽุธููŠู…ู

Sadaqa Allahul 'Adheem.

"Allah the Great has spoken the truth." โ€” (Widely practiced in the ummah; see Surah Al-Imran, 3:95)

The Story Behind It

The kaffaratul majlis dua comes from a hadith in which Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about a supplication she heard him say frequently. He replied: "Yes, whoever says these words, they will be an expiation for what happened in the gathering." (Abu Dawud 4857)

The concept behind this is profound. Even in our best moments of worship โ€” including reciting Quran โ€” we inevitably fall short. Our minds wander. Our hearts are not always fully present. Our tongues may slip. The kaffaratul majlis is not an admission of failure โ€” it is an act of humility. It says: I tried to give this sitting what it deserved, but You are greater than anything I can offer. I seek Your forgiveness for what fell short.

For Quran recitation specifically, this carries even more weight. The Quran is the direct word of Allah. To read it without full presence, without full understanding, without being changed by it โ€” that is a gap between what it deserves and what we gave. The closing dua asks Allah to forgive that gap and accept what was sincere.

How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life

The dua after reading Quran should become as automatic as putting the Quran away. Here is how to build that habit.

Make it your Quran bookmark

When you reach the end of your session, before you close the Quran or put down your phone, pause and say the kaffaratul majlis dua. Think of it as the bookmark that tells Allah: this sitting was for You. This practice turns the physical act of closing the Quran into a complete act of worship.

Add a 60-second personal dua after it

Immediately after the closing dua, your heart is in its most receptive state. The Quran has just passed through you โ€” or tried to. Use the next minute for your most important personal supplications. Ask for what you need. Ask for your family. Ask for the ummah. You are making dua from a position of spiritual elevation. Do not waste it.

Use the khatm closing for major milestones

When you complete a full reading of the Quran, treat it as a significant spiritual event. Gather your family if possible. Make an extended dua. Scholars throughout history have said that the moment of completing the Quran is among the most accepted times for supplication. This is not a moment to immediately reach for your phone.

Build both the opening and closing as one unit

A Quran session has a beginning and an end โ€” and both matter. The dua before reading Quran opens the connection; the closing dua seals it. Build them as one inseparable unit. If you skip either, the session is technically complete but spiritually incomplete.

Common Questions

How is the kaffaratul majlis dua different from regular istighfar?

Regular istighfar (Astaghfirullah) is a general seeking of forgiveness. The kaffaratul majlis dua is specifically structured โ€” it includes tasbih (glorification), shahada (witnessing), istighfar, and tawbah (repentance) in one complete statement. It is designed as the seal for a sitting that involved the remembrance of Allah, making it perfectly suited for closing a Quran session.

Can I say the dua silently?

Yes. Personal dua can be said silently or in a low voice. The Quran describes the believers as calling upon Allah in humility and without raising their voices (Surah Al-A'raf, 7:55). For the closing dua after Quran recitation, a quiet, present recitation is entirely appropriate.

What if I fall asleep while reading Quran? Do I still need to say the closing dua?

If you fall asleep during recitation, say the dua when you wake up and remember the session. The intention behind the practice matters more than the exact timing. Saying Astaghfirullah and the closing dua upon waking covers the gap gracefully.

I read Quran in Arabic but do not understand it. Is my recitation still valid?

Yes. Reciting the Quran in Arabic is valid and rewarded even without full comprehension โ€” the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the one who recites and struggles with it still receives double the reward (Sahih al-Bukhari 4937). However, reading with translation alongside your Arabic recitation โ€” even just a verse a day โ€” builds understanding over time. The closing dua asking for wisdom and benefit from what you recited is especially important if you are not yet understanding the Arabic.

Closing

Every Quran session leaves a trace. The question is what kind. When you close with the kaffaratul majlis dua, you are saying to Allah: I brought my best. I know it fell short. Forgive what was imperfect and accept what was sincere.

That posture โ€” humble, hopeful, honest โ€” is what the Quran was always trying to build in you. The closing dua is simply the moment it becomes explicit.

Close well. Then carry what you received into your day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dua should I say after reading Quran?

The most established dua after a Quran session is Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, ashhadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk โ€” often called the kaffaratul majlis (expiation of the gathering). It is authenticated in Abu Dawud 4857 and Tirmidhi 3433. After completing a full reading, add Sadaqa Allahul 'Adheem (Allah, the Great, has spoken the truth) as an acknowledgment of the Quran's divine origin.

What does Sadaqa Allahul Adheem mean and should I say it?

Sadaqa Allahul 'Adheem means 'Allah the Great has spoken the truth.' It is widely said after completing Quran recitation in Muslim tradition, though its status as a specific Sunnah practice is debated. Many scholars allow it as a general expression of affirming the truth of the Quran, while others prefer sticking to authenticated supplications. Saying the kaffaratul majlis dua (Abu Dawud 4857) is the more firmly established practice.

Is there a dua for completing the entire Quran (khatm)?

Yes. For completing a full khatm of the Quran, scholars recommend making an extended personal dua, as it is a time of answered supplications. The Prophet (peace be upon him) and the companions would gather for dua upon completing the Quran. Ask for anything important to you at this moment โ€” it is considered a highly answered time. See the dedicated post on dua for Quran khatam for details.

Should I make dua after reciting just a few ayahs, or only after a full session?

After any Quran session, however short. Even after one ayah, close with Bismillah's closing dua and gratitude. The kaffaratul majlis dua (Abu Dawud 4857) was taught as a general seal for any sitting that involves remembrance of Allah, including short Quran recitation sessions.

Can I make personal dua after reading Quran?

Yes, and you are encouraged to. After completing recitation, your heart is in a spiritually elevated state. This is an ideal time to make personal supplications โ€” for yourself, for your family, for the ummah. The closing dua seals the recitation, and your personal dua then ascends from a heart that has just been in the presence of Allah's words.
