In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Have you ever considered how much of an ordinary day could be transformed into worship โ€” without adding a single extra hour to your schedule?

That is the secret of the daily Sunnahs. The Prophet ๏ทบ lived his entire life in a state of conscious worship โ€” not because every moment was filled with formal prayer, but because he connected ordinary actions to Allah with intention, words, and the right manner.

Waking up. Eating. Entering a room. Using the bathroom. Sleeping. These are things you will do today regardless. The question is whether they count as worship or just as biology.

What the Sunnah Actually Is

The word Sunnah (ุณูู†ูŽู‘ุฉ) refers to the Prophet Muhammad's ๏ทบ established way โ€” his words, actions, approvals, and character. Following his Sunnah is one of the primary ways a Muslim expresses love for Allah.

"Say: If you love Allah, then follow me โ€” Allah will love you and forgive your sins."

โ€” (Surah Al-Imran, 3:31)

Following the Sunnah is not about rigid ritual performance. It is about bringing the consciousness of Allah into moments that would otherwise pass without awareness. That constant presence โ€” tawakkul meeting the mundane โ€” is the heart of Sunnah living.

Why Modern Muslims Struggle With Sunnah Practice

The main challenge is not knowledge โ€” most Muslims who grew up in practicing families know many Sunnahs. The challenge is intentionality. We go through daily actions on autopilot. Eating, sleeping, and moving through our environment without any dhikr, any intention, any conscious connection.

Modern life adds another layer: the default setting of our environment is distraction. Phones before sleep. Social media with breakfast. Podcast in the bathroom. Every pocket of daily life that the Sunnah would fill with remembrance of Allah is instead filled with content.

The nafs does not resist Sunnah practice dramatically โ€” it just makes it feel unnecessary, a minor addition rather than a fundamental way of being. Overcoming this requires deliberate habit installation.

How to Practice the Daily Sunnahs

Morning: Set the Tone Before Anything Else

The day begins with waking up. Before touching your phone, before getting out of bed, there is a specific Sunnah dua:

ุงู„ู’ุญูŽู…ู’ุฏู ู„ูู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ุงู„ูŽู‘ุฐููŠ ุฃูŽุญู’ูŠูŽุงู†ูŽุง ุจูŽุนู’ุฏูŽ ู…ูŽุง ุฃูŽู…ูŽุงุชูŽู†ูŽุง ูˆูŽุฅูู„ูŽูŠู’ู‡ู ุงู„ู†ูู‘ุดููˆุฑู

Alhamdulillahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur

"Praise be to Allah, who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection."

โ€” (Sahih Bukhari 6312)

Follow this with the morning adhkar โ€” a set of supplications the Prophet ๏ทบ taught for protection and connection at the start of the day. Our complete guide on how to do morning adhkar walks through the full sequence.

Use miswak (tooth stick). The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The miswak purifies the mouth and pleases the Lord." (Sunan An-Nasa'i 5) It can be used in the morning, before prayer, before reciting Quran, and any time the mouth needs freshening.

Before and After Eating

Say Bismillah (ุจูุณู’ู…ู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู) before eating. This one simple act turns every meal into an act of remembrance.

Eat with the right hand. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "None of you should eat with his left hand or drink with it, for indeed Shaytan eats with his left hand and drinks with it." (Sahih Muslim 2020)

Eat from what is in front of you, not from the middle of the dish. Eat sitting down. Do not blow on food that is hot. These small manners are themselves Sunnahs. See our full guide on sunnah of eating.

After eating, say:

Alhamdulillahil-ladhi at'amana wa saqana wa ja'alana Muslimin

"Praise be to Allah, who fed us and gave us drink and made us Muslims."

โ€” (Sunan Abu Dawud 3850)

Entering and Exiting Spaces

Say Bismillah before entering your home. Greet your family with Assalamu Alaikum even if no one is there. Leave with Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah (In the name of Allah, I put my trust in Allah).

Enter the bathroom with the left foot, saying the dua for entering. Exit with the right foot. This mindful switching of feet keeps you conscious of transitions and intention โ€” which is the entire purpose.

Before Sleep

Sleep on your right side. The Prophet ๏ทบ consistently slept on his right side with his right hand under his cheek. This is one of the most frequently mentioned physical Sunnahs of sleeping.

Read Ayatul Kursi before sleeping โ€” it grants protection through the night (Sahih Bukhari 5010). Recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas (the three Quls) three times each, blowing into your hands and wiping over your body. Say the sleep dua. See our full guide on sunnah of sleeping.

Throughout the Day

Say Salam when meeting Muslims. This spreads love and is itself an act of worship. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "You will not enter paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I guide you to something that if you did it, you would love one another? Spread the greeting of Salam among yourselves." (Sahih Muslim 54)

Smile. "Your smile in the face of your brother is charity." (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1956)

Use the right hand for giving, receiving, and any honoring activity.

Give charity regularly, even something small. "The believer gives shade with his charity on the Day of Judgment." (Sahih Muslim 1017)

Signs of Progress

When the daily Sunnahs begin to take hold, you will notice:

  • Automatic pausing before eating or drinking to say Bismillah, even when rushed
  • The phone stays down when Fajr comes in, replaced by the morning dua
  • A quieter start to the day โ€” the tone set by dhikr and intention carries through
  • Small acts feel charged with meaning โ€” what used to be routine now feels like connection
  • The gaps between your spiritual life and daily life start to close

This is not dramatic transformation. It is the quiet shift that comes from bringing Allah into the ordinary.

Common Questions

How many Sunnahs should I try to follow at once? One or two at a time. Seriously. Pick the ones attached to actions you already do โ€” saying Bismillah before eating, sleeping on your right side โ€” and make those automatic before adding more. Three weeks of consistent practice is the minimum before an action becomes habitual.

What if I forget the Sunnah in the moment? Say it as soon as you remember. The scholars mention that for some actions (like saying Bismillah before eating), you can say it mid-meal: "Bismillah, fi awwalihi wa akhirihi" (In the name of Allah at its beginning and end). The intention to follow the Sunnah matters even when execution is imperfect.

Is following Sunnahs more important than avoiding sins? Both matter, but avoiding sins takes priority. The Sunnah adds to your good deeds; unaddressed sins erase them. A useful frame: use Sunnah practices as replacements for haram habits โ€” fill the same time slots that used to have idle scrolling with adhkar instead.

Are there specific Sunnahs for Friday? Yes โ€” Jumu'ah has its own set of Sunnahs including ghusl (ritual bath), wearing clean clothes, reciting Surah Al-Kahf, sending salawat on the Prophet ๏ทบ, and attending the Friday prayer. See sunnah of Friday for the full list.

What about Sunnahs related to the senses โ€” like sneezing or yawning? These have specific prescribed responses too. See sunnah of sneezing for the Islamic etiquette around these and similar everyday moments.

The Alchemy of Ordinary Life

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are small." (Sahih Bukhari 6464)

A morning dua. Bismillah before meals. The right side for sleeping. These are small things. But done every day, with consciousness of Allah, they accumulate into something the Prophet ๏ทบ called the most beloved to Allah.

Your ordinary day โ€” all twenty-four hours of it โ€” can become a conversation with your Creator. The daily Sunnahs are the vocabulary for that conversation.

Start with one Sunnah today. Let it become automatic. Then add another. In a year, you will look back at a life quietly transformed by the small things done consistently in His name.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the daily Sunnahs of the Prophet?

Daily Sunnahs include actions like saying Bismillah before eating, sleeping on the right side, using the right hand for eating and drinking, entering the bathroom with the left foot, saying morning and evening adhkar, brushing with miswak, and making dua when waking up. These are consistent practices reported from the Prophet's life.

Are daily Sunnahs obligatory?

Most daily Sunnahs are recommended (mustahabb) rather than obligatory (fard). However, following them earns significant spiritual reward and is part of expressing love for the Prophet ๏ทบ. The Quran states: 'Say: If you love Allah, follow me โ€” Allah will love you.' (Surah Al-Imran, 3:31)

How do I start following the daily Sunnahs?

Start with one or two Sunnahs connected to actions you already do โ€” like saying Bismillah before eating or making dua when waking up. Once these become automatic (usually 3-4 weeks), add the next ones. Building a full Sunnah practice takes months, not days.

What is the reward for following the daily Sunnahs?

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'Whoever holds firmly to my Sunnah at a time when my Ummah is in corruption will receive the reward of a hundred martyrs.' (Al-Bayhaqi). Beyond rewards, Sunnah living shapes your character toward prophetic qualities โ€” patience, gratitude, and presence.

What is the most important daily Sunnah?

Scholars generally emphasize the morning and evening adhkar as the most encompassing daily Sunnah practice, followed by praying the five daily prayers at their earliest times. But the best Sunnah to focus on is the one you are not yet doing โ€” consistent practice of small acts is more valuable than knowing about many you ignore.
