In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You have probably been told to "marry someone religious." But what does that actually mean โ€” and how do you know when you have found it?

Choosing a spouse is one of the most consequential decisions of your life. It will shape your deen, your children, your mental health, and your akhirah. Yet most people approach it with far less thought than they give to choosing a career or a neighbourhood.

The Prophet ๏ทบ did not leave this to chance or culture. He gave us a clear, practical framework โ€” and it is more nuanced than most people realise.

What the Sunnah Actually Says

The most quoted hadith on marriage gives you the criteria directly:

"A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty, and her deen. Choose the one with deen and your hands will prosper." (Sahih Bukhari 5090)

Note what the Prophet ๏ทบ did not say: he did not say the other qualities are irrelevant. He said when deen is present, everything else falls into place. Deen (ุฏููŠู†) here means more than just praying five times a day. It encompasses how a person treats others, how they handle conflict, whether they are honest, whether they show mercy.

The Arabic word falaha (ููŽู„ูŽุงุญูŽ) โ€” "prosper" or "succeed" โ€” in this hadith refers to a deep flourishing: in your faith, your family, and your future. That is the promise attached to the right choice.

The Prophet ๏ทบ also said: "This world is all temporary enjoyment, and the greatest joy in this world is a righteous wife." (Sahih Muslim 1467)

A righteous spouse is not one who never makes mistakes. It is one who, when they err, returns to Allah. That return โ€” that orientation toward tawbah and growth โ€” is the real indicator of deen.

Why This Decision Is Harder Than It Looks

Your nafs complicates everything. The nafs wants what looks good right now: the attractive face, the impressive family, the exciting personality. It does not naturally weigh long-term compatibility or shared values.

Culture adds another layer. Families sometimes prioritise ethnicity, education, or status over character. Social pressure makes you feel like you need to decide quickly before the "good ones" are taken. And the fear of being single can push people into settling for someone whose values they quietly know are not right for them.

The result? Marriages that start with hope and end in damage โ€” not because the couple was bad, but because they built on the wrong foundation.

The other trap is the fantasy standard โ€” waiting for someone flawless who ticks every box. No such person exists. The question is not "are they perfect?" but "are they growing, and do their values align with mine?"

How to Assess a Potential Spouse Islamically

Knowing the criteria is one thing. Applying them in real encounters is another. Here is a practical approach rooted in Sunnah.

Look at how they treat people who can do nothing for them. How do they treat service workers, elderly relatives, or strangers? Character reveals itself in low-stakes moments, not in the impression they make on you.

Listen for how they talk about their past. Do they speak with responsibility or blame? Someone who cannot acknowledge their own faults will find it very difficult to grow in a marriage.

Assess their relationship with prayer. Not whether they pray โ€” but how they relate to it. Is salah something they genuinely try to protect, or just a performance? Prayer is the most honest indicator of a person's inner life.

Notice how they handle disagreement. Do they get defensive, dismissive, or disrespectful? Conflict is inevitable in marriage. What matters is whether someone can navigate it with hilm (ุญูู„ู’ู…) โ€” patient forbearance.

Ask about their long-term vision. A person who cannot articulate where they want to go in their deen and their life will not be able to walk alongside you consistently.

Perform Salat al-Istikhara. This is not a magic decision-maker โ€” it is an act of trust. You are saying: "I have done my part. I delegate the outcome to You, Ya Allah." Then move forward with sincerity and trust that the door that opens is the one that was meant to open.

Involve people who know you well. The wali system is not just legal formality. Trusted advisors โ€” family members, mentors, imams โ€” have a perspective on you that you may not have on yourself. Use it.

Give the process time, but not unlimited time. Extended periods of getting to know someone with no clear intention drift into attachment without commitment. Keep the timeline purposeful.

Signs You Are Making a Sound Decision

You are on the right track when:

  • You feel peace, not just excitement โ€” excitement fades, peace endures
  • The person makes you want to be a better Muslim, not just a happier person
  • Your trusted people, when they know the person properly, affirm the choice
  • You can be honest with them without fear of judgment or rejection
  • Your reason for choosing them goes beyond physical attraction or social prestige

Common Questions

What if I have feelings for someone before marriage โ€” is that okay? Feelings arise without permission. The question is what you do with them. Keep the process halal, keep the communication appropriate, and make a decision with clarity rather than letting emotions drive an open-ended situation.

How do I tell my parents no if their choice is not right for me? Respectfully and with evidence. You are not obliged to marry someone you genuinely believe is not suitable. Explain your concerns โ€” especially around character and deen โ€” calmly and repeatedly if needed. If necessary, involve a trusted imam who can mediate.

Is it permissible to use matrimonial apps? Yes, as long as you use them within Islamic boundaries โ€” avoiding prolonged private conversations, staying clear on your intentions, and progressing at an appropriate pace toward commitment.

Closing

Marriage begins with a choice, and that choice begins with your own clarity about what you are building and why. Do not let culture, pressure, or the nafs make this decision for you.

Ask Allah for guidance. Look for taqwa and character. And remember that a marriage rooted in deen is not a limitation โ€” it is the ground in which everything else can grow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it permissible to meet a potential spouse before marriage?

Yes โ€” with appropriate boundaries. Scholars permit meeting a potential spouse in a chaperoned or appropriate setting to assess compatibility. This is not the same as a Western-style dating relationship.

What if my family disapproves of someone who is practising and of good character?

Family input matters but does not override Islamic criteria. If someone meets the Prophetic standards of deen and character, and your family objects for cultural or worldly reasons, scholars say the objection is not valid grounds for rejection.

How important is physical attraction in Islamic marriage?

Important enough that the Prophet ๏ทบ encouraged viewing a potential spouse before committing. Attraction is part of a healthy marriage. What the Sunnah cautions against is making it the only criterion.

How many times should I perform Salat al-Istikhara?

Once is sufficient. The istikhara is not about a dream or a feeling โ€” it is an act of delegating the outcome to Allah. Make it, then move forward with your best judgment and trust that Allah will open or close what is right.

What is the role of a wali in choosing a spouse?

The wali (guardian) plays a legally significant role in the nikah. Beyond the technicality, a wise wali is someone who knows you well and can give honest counsel โ€” their perspective is a valuable check, not a veto over your life.
