In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The alarm did not go off. Or it went off and you turned it off half-asleep. Or you were traveling, exhausted, ill.
Now it is 8am and the sun is up and Fajr is gone.
What do you do?
This is one of the most practically important rulings in Islam β because Fajr is statistically the prayer most often missed, and the confusion about what to do afterward keeps some people from praying it at all, which makes a bad situation much worse.
The Short Answer
Pray Fajr now, after sunrise. It is valid, obligatory, and must not be skipped.
The Prophet ο·Ί left no ambiguity on this:
"Whoever forgets a prayer or oversleeps it, let him pray it when he remembers it. There is no expiation for it other than that."
β (Sahih Bukhari 597, Sahih Muslim 684)
The phrase "let him pray it when he remembers it" is an instruction, not a suggestion. And "when he remembers it" β not "when it is more convenient" or "at the next prayer time." Now. As soon as you realize.
Missing the Fajr time creates a debt (qada) β a makeup prayer that is owed. The prayer is not voided. The obligation does not disappear. It waits.
The Evidence β Why the Ruling Is Clear
The Prophet ο·Ί himself once missed a prayer time in extraordinary circumstances. During a journey, he ο·Ί and his Companions overslept Fajr. He did not declare the prayer lost. He made wudu, prayed the sunnah of Fajr, then prayed the fard, and they continued. (Sahih Muslim 680)
This incident is the proof for the entire ruling. The Prophet's action is sunna and instruction. If he missed the time and made it up immediately, so do we.
Scholars of all four major schools (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) agree: a missed obligatory prayer must be made up (qada). The only difference is in minor details of when a person with chronic missed prayers should catch up β not in whether missed prayers are owed.
The Details β Common Situations
"I woke up at 9am and realized I missed Fajr." Pray it now. Make wudu, pray the two sunnah rakats of Fajr (optional but recommended), then pray the two fard rakats. Say the proper intention: "I intend to pray the qada of Fajr prayer."
"Can I delay it until another prayer comes?" No β not without valid reason. The Prophet said "when he remembers" β not "later." Once you are aware you missed Fajr, the obligation to pray it is immediate. You can pause for work or a meeting if you truly must, but do not delay it until Dhuhr by choice.
"I was sick and could not pray at all." The ruling on makeup prayers due to illness is nuanced. If you were unconscious or severely incapacitated, some scholars say makeup is not required for those specific prayers. "What time zone should I use when traveling internationally?" Use the time of wherever you physically are. If you cross time zones and your Fajr time shifted dramatically, pray according to the local time at your actual location. The obligation follows the sun you are under, not the one you came from.
"I regularly sleep through Fajr. Does each missed prayer need to be made up?" Yes. Each missed fard prayer is a separate debt. If you have missed Fajr many times, you owe that many makeup prayers. The nafs, when you miss Fajr, will offer several options: feel crushing guilt and do nothing, assume the prayer is voided and move on, or delay it "until Dhuhr since Fajr time is over anyway."

Can I pray the sunnah of Fajr if I am making up a missed Fajr after sunrise? Yes. The two rakats of sunnah Fajr are recommended even when making up the prayer after its time. Pray the sunnah first, then the fard.

Is it a major sin to miss Fajr intentionally?
Intentionally abandoning an obligatory prayer is a major sin by scholarly consensus. Missing one prayer occasionally through oversleeping, while serious, is treated as forgetting/sleeping β for which the Prophet provided the makeup prayer ruling. The person who regularly and intentionally skips Fajr without excuse is in a much more serious situation and needs immediate sincere repentance.
