In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A new child arrives in your home, and alongside the joy and exhaustion, you have Islamic responsibilities to fulfil. One of the most significant โ€” and most often delayed โ€” is aqiqah.

This guide walks you through everything you need to know: what aqiqah is, why it matters, how to do it correctly, and how to make it meaningful rather than just a formality.

Why Aqiqah Matters

The Prophet ๏ทบ said:

"Every child is pledged to his aqiqah which should be sacrificed for him on the seventh day, and he should be given a name, and his head should be shaved." (Abu Dawud 2838, Tirmidhi 1522)

The word murtahinun in this hadith โ€” translated as "pledged" โ€” is significant. Scholars have interpreted this as meaning the child's intercession for their parents, or the child's spiritual flourishing, is linked to the aqiqah being performed. It is a serious responsibility.

Aqiqah (ุนูŽู‚ููŠู‚ูŽุฉ) comes from the Arabic root meaning to cut or sever โ€” specifically referring to the cutting of the newborn's hair and the slaughter made at that time. It is a celebration of gratitude to Allah for the gift of the child, a formal introduction of the child into the community, and an act of sadaqah that benefits the family and those they share the meal with.

The scholars classify aqiqah as sunnah mu'akkadah โ€” a confirmed sunnah, one that the Prophet ๏ทบ performed and encouraged strongly. Leaving it without a valid reason is considered blameworthy.

Step 1: Know the Correct Timing

The Prophet ๏ทบ specified the seventh day. Count the day of birth as day one โ€” so if the child was born on a Monday, the seventh day is Sunday of the following week.

If the seventh day passes without the aqiqah being performed โ€” due to financial difficulty, illness, or unawareness โ€” it may be done on the fourteenth or twenty-first day. The sunnah pattern follows multiples of seven.

If none of these fall within reach, perform the aqiqah whenever you are able. The obligation does not lapse.

Step 2: Know How Many Animals

The ruling is clear from multiple authentic hadiths (Abu Dawud 2835; Tirmidhi 1513):

  • For a boy: two sheep or goats
  • For a girl: one sheep or goat

The animals must meet the same conditions as those for udhiyyah (Eid al-Adha sacrifice):

  • Sheep or goats must be at least one year old
  • Free from significant defects โ€” not blind, lame, severely ill, or extremely thin
  • Slaughtered according to Islamic method by a Muslim who says Bismillah

If you cannot afford two animals for a boy, one is permissible โ€” the sunnah is the ideal, not a barrier.

Step 3: Know What to Do with the Meat

There is flexibility here. The general practice, following scholarly guidance derived from hadith analogy, is to:

  • Eat one-third yourself (the family)
  • Give one-third as gifts to friends, neighbours, and family
  • Give one-third as sadaqah to the poor

You may also host a meal and invite people to share in the celebration. The act of gathering people to eat together is itself a sunnah โ€” it builds community and shares the joy of the new arrival.

The meat may be given raw or cooked. It may be given to non-Muslims as an act of generosity.

Step 4: Shave the Head and Give Sadaqah of Silver

On the seventh day, the baby's head is shaved. The Prophet ๏ทบ weighed the hair of Hasan and Husayn and gave in charity the equivalent weight in silver (Tirmidhi 1519). This is the recommended practice.

In contemporary settings, you do not need to literally weigh hair against silver โ€” you give a charitable donation equivalent to the approximate weight. This is a small but meaningful act of generosity attached to the celebration.

The shaving of the head is done for both boys and girls.

Step 5: Name the Child

Naming on the seventh day is the sunnah โ€” it aligns with the aqiqah day. See Naming a Baby in Islam for comprehensive guidance on choosing a name that is blessed, meaningful, and Islamically sound.

The adhan (call to prayer) and iqama are traditionally recited in the baby's ears at birth โ€” ideally before the aqiqah day, right at birth.

Mark Every Milestone with Gratitude and Consistency

The aqiqah is one act of gratitude. A lifetime of salah, dhikr, and dua is another. DeenBack helps you build the daily habits of shukr that match the magnitude of the gift you have received.

Making the Aqiqah Meaningful, Not Just Mechanical

Many families perform aqiqah as a formality โ€” arranging the sacrifice and moving on. But the aqiqah is designed to be a moment of community, gratitude, and intentional blessing.

Gather people. Invite family, neighbours, and friends to share in the meal and make dua for the child. Community duaa at a gathering carries a special quality.

Make explicit dua for the child. Ask Allah specifically for the child's guidance, their iman, their health, their character. Be specific. Write down what you want for them. Let others make dua too.

Recite the names of Allah as the sacrifice is made. The slaughter is an act of worship.

Teach older children what is happening and why. If you have other children, this is an opportunity to explain Islamic practices in a way that roots them in gratitude and family belonging.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Leaving it indefinitely. "We'll do it when we can afford it properly" becomes never. The Prophet ๏ทบ commanded it for the seventh day, indicating urgency. Do what you can with what you have.

Treating it as purely cultural. In some communities, the aqiqah becomes a large and expensive party. The sunnah is the sacrifice and the sharing of meat. A gathering is good โ€” an elaborate event that strains finances contradicts the spirit of the act.

Doing it without the slaughter. Donating money equivalent to an animal's cost is not a substitute for the aqiqah sacrifice. The slaughter is the act. If you cannot afford an animal locally, there are organisations that perform aqiqah on your behalf in countries where animals are affordable.

Forgetting the sadaqah of silver. This step is often overlooked entirely. It is part of the sunnah and takes only a few minutes to calculate and give.

Common Questions

Can I perform aqiqah in a different country for cost reasons? Yes. Many organisations facilitate aqiqah abroad where animals cost a fraction of Western prices. Ensure the organisation is reputable, performs the slaughter according to Islamic conditions, and distributes the meat to those in need.

What if we are unsure whether the aqiqah was performed for us as children? Some scholars say an adult may perform their own aqiqah. Others consider it time-specific to birth. Since there is scholarly difference, consult a local scholar and act on the position you find most sound.

Can the father perform the aqiqah slaughter himself? Yes, provided he knows the proper method. Many families find meaning in the father performing it directly โ€” it is a connection to the prophetic practice.

Closing

The aqiqah is one of the first things you do as an Islamic parent โ€” and it sets a tone. It says: this child came from Allah, this life is a gift, and we respond to gifts with gratitude and generosity.

Do not let practicalities delay what is possible. Do it, make dua, share the meat, and begin the journey of raising this trust in the way it deserves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is aqiqah in Islam?

Aqiqah is the sacrificial slaughter performed on behalf of a newborn, traditionally on the seventh day after birth. It is a sunnah mu'akkadah โ€” a confirmed sunnah that the Prophet ๏ทบ strongly encouraged.

How many animals are sacrificed for aqiqah?

Two sheep or goats for a boy, and one for a girl. This is based on the hadith reported in Abu Dawud and authenticated by scholars. All animals must meet the conditions of a valid sacrifice: healthy, of appropriate age, without defects.

Can aqiqah be done after the seventh day?

Yes. The seventh day is the sunnah, but if it is not possible then, it can be performed on the fourteenth day, the twenty-first day, or whenever it becomes possible. The obligation does not expire.

Can the aqiqah meat be given to non-Muslims?

Scholars permit giving aqiqah meat to non-Muslims, as with sadaqah generally. It is an act of generosity, not a restricted ritual offering.

What if someone was never given an aqiqah as a child?

Some scholars say a person can perform their own aqiqah as an adult. Others say the aqiqah period is specifically for birth and cannot be compensated later. Consult a local scholar for guidance on your specific situation.
