In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Most Muslims know zakat exists. Many know it is 2.5%. But when it comes to actually calculating what they owe โ€” especially on savings โ€” they either freeze up, guess, or quietly postpone.

This is one of the pillars of Islam. It is not optional, and it is not as complicated as it feels. Here is everything you need to calculate and pay zakat on your savings.

What Makes Cash Savings Zakatable

Zakat applies to mal โ€” wealth โ€” when it meets three conditions:

  1. Nisab: the minimum threshold amount
  2. Hawl: held for a complete lunar year
  3. Ownership: you fully own it without outstanding obligations

Cash in your possession โ€” whether in a bank account, a savings account, or physically at home โ€” meets all three conditions if you have had it for over a year and it is above the nisab.

The Prophet ๏ทบ said:

"There is no zakat on wealth until one year passes over it." โ€” (Abu Dawud 1573)

And on the obligation itself, Allah says:

ุฎูุฐู’ ู…ูู†ู’ ุฃูŽู…ู’ูˆูŽุงู„ูู‡ูู…ู’ ุตูŽุฏูŽู‚ูŽุฉู‹ ุชูุทูŽู‡ูู‘ุฑูู‡ูู…ู’ ูˆูŽุชูุฒูŽูƒูู‘ูŠู‡ูู… ุจูู‡ูŽุง

"Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase." โ€” (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:103)

Zakat is not just financial โ€” it is spiritual purification of your wealth.

The Nisab: Your Threshold

The nisab for cash is calculated by reference to the value of either 85g of gold or 595g of silver at current market prices.

Why two different standards? The Prophet ๏ทบ established the nisab in both gold and silver at a time when their values were proportionate. Today, the silver nisab is typically much lower in cash terms than the gold nisab โ€” sometimes by a factor of 5 or more.

Many scholars recommend the silver nisab because:

  • It is the more conservative interpretation
  • It ensures more wealth is brought into zakat circulation
  • It protects the poor's right to a larger share of the Muslim community's wealth

Practical step: Search "silver price per gram" and multiply by 595 to get the nisab in your currency today. If your savings exceed this amount, you may owe zakat.

How to Calculate Zakat on Savings

Step 1: Choose your calculation date Pick a date that you will use every year โ€” typically the date of Ramadan 1st or the anniversary of when you first reached the nisab. Be consistent.

Step 2: List all cash and savings Include: bank current accounts, savings accounts, cash at home, foreign currency holdings.

Do NOT include: debts you owe (subtract these from your assets), money you have already committed to paying but not yet paid.

Step 3: Check if you are at nisab Is your total cash (plus gold, silver, and investments) above the nisab? If yes, proceed.

Step 4: Calculate 2.5%

Zakat due = total zakatable savings ร— 2.5%

Example: You have ยฃ10,000 in savings, ยฃ2,000 in your current account, and ยฃ500 cash at home. Total: ยฃ12,500. Zakat due: ยฃ12,500 ร— 0.025 = ยฃ312.50

Step 5: Pay it Give directly to eligible recipients or through a verified zakat organization. See how to give zakat correctly for guidance on eligible recipients.

What About Debts?

If you have outstanding debts โ€” loans, credit card balances, money you owe to family โ€” you may subtract these from your savings before calculating zakat.

Example: ยฃ10,000 savings, ยฃ3,000 credit card debt. Zakatable savings: ยฃ7,000. Zakat: ยฃ175.

This only applies to short-term, immediate debts โ€” not a long-term mortgage. Consult a scholar for complex debt situations. See also how to calculate zakat for a comprehensive overview.

Combining Savings with Other Wealth

Zakat does not work in isolation โ€” your savings are combined with your gold, silver, investments, and business inventory to determine your total zakatable wealth. See:

Once your combined wealth exceeds the nisab, zakat applies to the total at 2.5%.

Common Mistakes Muslims Make

Mistake 1: Only paying zakat on Ramadan savings Many Muslims only save during Ramadan and forget to check the rest of the year. Zakat follows the lunar calendar from when you first reached the nisab โ€” not the Ramadan calendar.

Mistake 2: Using the gold nisab when the silver nisab is lower If you are trying to find reasons not to pay zakat, this is a way some people rationalize. But the silver nisab is the historically consistent measure for cash savings, and using it is the more cautious position.

Mistake 3: Forgetting to include foreign currency or savings in another country Zakat applies to all wealth you own globally, not just what is in one bank.

Mistake 4: Including interest in the zakatable amount Interest earned is haram โ€” do not include it in your assets. Donate it without expecting reward. Your zakatable amount is your principal and any halal returns.

Mistake 5: Never getting around to it The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Procrastination in repaying debts by the wealthy is injustice." (Sahih Bukhari 2400) Delayed zakat is a delayed debt โ€” not a canceled one.

A Dua for Barakah in Your Wealth

When paying zakat, say:

ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ูู…ูŽู‘ ุงุฌู’ุนูŽู„ู’ู‡ูŽุง ู…ูŽุบู’ู†ูŽู…ู‹ุง ูˆูŽู„ูŽุง ุชูŽุฌู’ุนูŽู„ู’ู‡ูŽุง ู…ูŽุบู’ุฑูŽู…ู‹ุง

"O Allah, make it a gain and do not make it a loss." โ€” (Ibn Majah 1799)

This is a dua reported from the practice of early Muslims when giving charity, expressing trust that giving zakat increases wealth rather than diminishing it โ€” which is exactly what the Quran promises.

Common Questions

What if I did not know I had to pay zakat on savings in previous years? Calculate what was due based on your records and pay it now. Treat it as a debt to Allah. Make tawbah for the years of unawareness.

Can I give zakat directly to a needy family member? Yes โ€” if they qualify as eligible recipients (poor, in debt, etc.) and are not your direct dependents (spouse, children you are obligated to support).

Does zakat apply to a child's savings? Most scholars say zakat is not obligatory on a minor's wealth โ€” it is obligatory on adults.

Can I combine my zakat with my spouse's zakat? No โ€” each adult Muslim calculates and pays their own zakat separately.

Closing โ€” Purify What You Have, Trust in What Comes

The Arabic root of zakat means both purification and growth. This is not coincidental. When you give zakat, you purify what remains โ€” and you grow in ways that cannot always be measured in bank statements.

Allah says He multiplies charity:

"The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains." โ€” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:261)

Set your calculation date. Do the math. Pay what you owe. Then trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is zakat due on savings?

Yes. Cash savings held above the nisab threshold for a full lunar year are subject to zakat at a rate of 2.5%. This includes money in current accounts, savings accounts, and cash at home.

What is the nisab for cash savings?

The nisab is calculated using either the gold standard (85g of gold) or the silver standard (595g of silver). In cash terms, check today's price to calculate the threshold. Many scholars recommend the silver nisab as it is lower and ensures more people fulfill the obligation.

Do I pay zakat on my entire savings or just the amount above nisab?

You pay 2.5% on your total zakatable wealth โ€” not just the amount above nisab. Once you reach or exceed the nisab, the 2.5% applies to everything you own above zero.

Does interest earned in a savings account get included in my zakat calculation?

No โ€” interest income is haram and should not be consumed or included in your zakatable assets. Donate it to charity without taking reward. See your base deposit amount for zakat purposes.

What if my savings fluctuate throughout the year?

Most scholars say zakat is due on the amount you have at the end of your lunar year, not the highest or average balance. Some scholars use the lowest balance held throughout the year โ€” consult a scholar for your specific situation.
