Who Was Khadijah? The First Muslim and the Prophet's Greatest Support

When the Prophet ﷺ ran back from the cave of Hira trembling, not knowing what had just happened to him, there was one person he ran to. One person he trusted completely. One person whose response would either ground him or destroy him.

That was Khadijah.

And her response — immediate, clear, unwavering — was the first act of iman in the history of Islam.

Who Was Khadijah bint Khuwaylid?

Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (رضي الله عنها) was born around 555 CE in Mecca into a respected family of the Quraysh tribe. By the time the Prophet ﷺ entered her life, she was already a successful and prominent businesswoman — a widow who had grown and protected a significant trading enterprise in her own name, at a time when this was far from common.

She was known in Mecca for her intelligence, her dignity, and her generosity to the poor. She had been proposed to by prominent men of Quraysh and turned them down. When she heard about the young, trustworthy, honest man named Muhammad who was running her caravans with exceptional integrity, she paid attention.

She proposed marriage to him — the only recorded instance of a woman proposing marriage in the Prophet's story. She was approximately forty years old; he was twenty-five. They married and remained together for twenty-five years, until her death.

The Prophet ﷺ never took another wife during Khadijah's lifetime.

The Moment That Defined Everything

When the first revelation came in the cave of Hira and the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) embraced the Prophet ﷺ and commanded him to recite, the Prophet returned to Khadijah shaking:

"Cover me! Cover me!"

She wrapped him in a cloak and held him until the fear subsided. Then he told her what had happened.

Her response was one of the most decisive moments in Islamic history:

"Never, by Allah! Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kith and kin, help the poor and destitute, serve your guests generously, and assist those afflicted by calamity." — (Sahih Bukhari 3)

She listed his qualities not as flattery but as evidence. She reasoned from his character to the nature of his experience. She then took him to her wise cousin Waraqah ibn Nawfal, who confirmed that what had come to Muhammad ﷺ was the same divine messenger that had come to Moses before.

Khadijah believed first. Completely. Before the Prophet ﷺ himself was fully certain of what was happening. That act of faith was the anchor that held him in place.

What She Sacrificed

When the Quraysh imposed a social and economic boycott on the Muslims and the Hashimi clan — cutting off all trade and social relations — Khadijah was inside the boycott. She who had been one of the wealthiest women in Mecca lived through three years of deprivation and starvation, in solidarity with the Prophet ﷺ and the early Muslim community.

She spent her personal wealth — built over decades of business — in support of the early Muslims. Purchasing freedom for enslaved converts, supporting those who had been driven from their homes, sustaining the early community through years of persecution.

By the time she died in 619 CE, her wealth was largely gone. She had spent it for Islam.

The Prophet ﷺ grieved her death so profoundly that the year she died — along with the death of his uncle Abu Talib — is called the Year of Sorrow in seerah.

He described her after her death:

"She believed in me when people disbelieved. She trusted in me when people belied me. She supported me with her wealth when people deprived me, and Allah gave me children through her." — (Musnad Ahmad 24864)

The Greeting From Allah

Khadijah's standing was so high that Allah sent her a specific personal greeting through the Angel Jibril while she was still alive. The Prophet ﷺ came to her one day and said:

"Jibril has come to me and told me to greet you with salam from your Lord. And he informs you of a house in Paradise, made of hollow pearls — no fatigue, and no noise within it." — (Sahih Bukhari 3820)

A personal salam from Allah, delivered through His angel, to a woman. This is Khadijah's station in Islam.

Khadijah did not believe when Islam became socially acceptable. She believed when it was frightening, uncertain, and carried enormous personal cost. The nafs wants to wait until something is proven before committing. Khadijah shows that the commitment itself is what makes the thing real.

Ask yourself: where in your life are you waiting to fully commit until you see how it turns out? In your worship, your relationships, your principles — what would it mean to believe and commit now, not after the outcome is clear?

Use Your Resources for More Than Yourself

Khadijah spent decades building wealth and then gave most of it away in service of what she believed. Her trading empire became a vehicle for the greatest cause in history.

Steady Presence Is Its Own Form of Worship

Khadijah did not give one extraordinary act of support. She was present, consistently, across twenty-five years of marriage during which the Prophet ﷺ received the most demanding mission in human history. Her daily presence — her steadiness, her belief, her partnership — was itself an act of worship.
