In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The Short Answer
Islam never asks you to do the impossible. When normal prayer is not possible, you adapt โ you do not skip.
The Quran is explicit: "Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:286). This verse is not just comfort โ it is a legal principle. Every major ruling in Islamic law is tied to ability. Salah is obligatory. How you perform it scales to your situation.
The five daily prayers are not suspended by illness, travel, or impurity. They are adapted. Here is how.
The Evidence for Concessions in Prayer
ููู ูุง ุฌูุนููู ุนูููููููู ู ููู ุงูุฏููููู ู ููู ุญูุฑูุฌู
Wa ma ja'ala 'alaykum fid-deeni min haraj
"And He has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty."
โ (Surah Al-Hajj, 22:78)
Imran ibn Husayn ุฑุถู ุงููู ุนูู reported: "I had hemorrhoids, so I asked the Prophet ๏ทบ about prayer. He said: 'Pray standing. If you are unable, then sitting. If you are unable, then on your side.'" โ (Sahih Bukhari 1117, sunnah.com)
The wisdom behind the ruling: the obligation is the prayer itself. The physical posture is the means. When the means are beyond reach, you find the closest alternative โ not the exit.
The Details and Common Cases
Illness โ Praying When Your Body Cannot Cooperate
Too sick to stand: Pray sitting. This is the clearest and most well-established concession. The full prayer โ all rakats, recitation, and timing โ remains the same. Only your posture changes.
Cannot complete the physical movements: If bowing (ruku') and prostration (sujood) are impossible, indicate them with head movements. Lower your head slightly more for sujood than for ruku'. Scholars say: do as much as you can manage.
Cannot maintain wudu due to illness: If you have a condition causing continuous discharge (chronic condition, wound, etc.), many scholars say you make wudu once for each prayer time and pray with that wudu even if the condition continues during prayer. This is the concession of sahib al-'udhr (the person with an excuse).
Fever, pain, or dizziness making concentration impossible: This does not excuse the prayer, but it is a mercy that Allah accepts what you offer. A prayer offered through pain and difficulty may be worth more in sincerity than an effortless one.
Travel โ Salah on the Road
Traveling Muslims have two key concessions:
Shortening (qasr): Four-rakat prayers (Dhuhr, Asr, Isha) become two rakats. This applies when you are a traveler as defined by your madhab (usually a journey of approximately 80+ km / 50+ miles).
Combining (jam'): Dhuhr and Asr can be combined at either time. Maghrib and Isha can be combined at either time. This does not require you to be moving โ once you have left your city of residence as a traveler, combining becomes valid.
Fajr is not shortened or combined โ it has its own time and cannot be moved.
The Prophet ๏ทบ regularly combined and shortened prayers during travel, and the Companions narrated this extensively. Read can you combine prayers for full detail on the travel ruling.
Impurity โ When You Cannot Make Wudu
No water available: Perform tayammum (dry ablution) with clean earth, soil, dust, or โ according to most scholars โ any clean natural surface including sand or stone. The Quran permits this explicitly:
ููููู ู ุชูุฌูุฏููุง ู ูุงุกู ููุชูููู ููู ููุง ุตูุนููุฏูุง ุทููููุจูุง
"If you cannot find water, then seek clean earth and wipe your faces and your hands."
โ (Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:6)
Read how to make tayammum for the step-by-step.
Junub (major ritual impurity) with no access to water: Perform tayammum and pray. Delaying the prayer indefinitely while waiting for ghusl access is not permitted when tayammum is available.
Medical situations preventing wudu: Wounds, casts, burns โ scholars permit wiping over bandages and casts in wudu rather than removing them. The area under the bandage does not need to be wet.
Location โ Praying Outside the Masjid
You can pray anywhere that is clean. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The whole earth has been made a masjid (place of prayer) for me." (Sahih Bukhari 335)
In a car, on a plane, at work โ if the prayer time is about to expire, pray where you are with whatever accommodations the space requires. A prayer offered on time in an imperfect location is better than a makeup prayer after a missed time.
For prayer in a vehicle when standing and facing the qibla precisely are impossible, scholars permit praying in the direction of travel for a moving vehicle, with indicators for ruku' and sujood. The obligation does not wait.
Do Not Let Doubt Win
The greatest enemy of prayer during hardship is waswas โ the whisper that says your prayer does not count, that you are too impure, that the conditions are not right, that you should wait for a better time.
The principle that defeats waswas: certainty is not removed by doubt. If you are in a state of purity and you doubt whether something broke it, you are still in wudu โ unless you are certain something happened. If you prayed and doubt whether a rakat was complete, assume it was โ unless you are certain it was not.
This principle (from the well-known fiqh maxim al-yaqeen la yuzalu bish-shakk) is not a loophole. It is a mercy designed to prevent obsession from destroying worship. The Prophet ๏ทบ knew that shaitan specifically targets salah with doubt โ and he gave us tools to defeat it.

Common Questions
"If I am sick and pray lying down, is the prayer really valid?" Completely valid. The scholars are unanimous on this. The obligation is to pray. Your physical posture is secondary to the intention and the prayer itself. Allah is not counting your rakat while ignoring your situation.
"What if I keep forgetting the prayer count when I am unwell?" This is common. The prophetic guidance is to assume the lower number โ if you are unsure whether you prayed two or three rakats, assume two and add another. See what to do if you forget a rakat for full detail.
"Can I delay all my prayers until I feel better?" No. You may not delay a prayer beyond its time. However, if you were unconscious or in genuine incapacity during an entire prayer time, that is treated differently โ make it up when you recover. For ordinary illness, adapt the prayer rather than delay it. See what to do if you miss a prayer for makeup prayer guidance.
"My workplace does not have a prayer space. What do I do?" Find any clean space โ a break room, a quiet corner, outside. The whole earth is a masjid. If no space is available, speak with HR about accommodation โ many countries have workplace religious accommodation laws. If the prayer time is ending and no arrangement is possible, pray in whatever space you can find. Your deen does not pause for your workplace.
Closing
Salah is not suspended by hardship. It is adapted for it. The deen is built with human reality in mind โ illness, travel, urgency, impurity โ and every one of these situations has a clear Islamic response.
When you cannot pray the way you normally do, adapt the form and guard the obligation. A prayer offered imperfectly through hardship honors Allah more than a prayer skipped while waiting for perfect conditions.
Find the way. The way always exists.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I am too sick to pray standing?
Pray sitting. If you cannot sit, pray lying on your side facing the qibla. If you cannot do that, pray lying on your back with your feet toward the qibla. The prayer is valid in all these positions. Allah only obligates what you can manage โ the rakats and timings remain the same, only the posture changes.
Can I pray without wudu if I cannot make wudu?
If you cannot use water due to illness or its unavailability, perform tayammum (dry ablution) using clean earth or dust. This is a concession Allah granted. If you cannot perform even tayammum, scholars differ but many say you should still attempt prayer to the best of your ability.
What if I miss a prayer entirely due to unconsciousness or severe illness?
If you miss prayers due to unconsciousness, sleep, or severe illness where you were completely incapacitated, make up those prayers when you recover. There is no expiation (kaffarah) required โ simply make qada (makeup) prayers. Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear.
Can I combine prayers when traveling?
Yes. A traveler may combine Dhuhr with Asr (at either time) and Maghrib with Isha (at either time). You may also shorten the four-rakat prayers (Dhuhr, Asr, Isha) to two rakats each. Travel distance and duration thresholds vary slightly by madhab โ follow the position of a trusted scholar.
What if I am in a place where I cannot find the qibla direction?
Try your best using the sun, stars, compass, or phone app. If you genuinely cannot determine the direction after trying, pray in the direction you believe is most likely correct. Your prayer is valid. Allah does not punish sincere effort.
