In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You have crypto. It has grown. And now a question is sitting uncomfortably in the back of your mind: is there zakat due on this? And is the whole question of paying zakat on crypto even valid โ or is it somehow haram to equate digital assets with Islamic obligations?
Let us cut through the confusion. The question is not whether paying zakat is haram (it never is โ zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam). The real question is whether cryptocurrency triggers zakat obligations and how to fulfill them correctly.
The Quick Answer
Yes โ cryptocurrency triggers zakat for most Muslims who hold it above the nisab threshold for a full lunar year.
The majority position among contemporary Islamic scholars and bodies (including AAOIFI, Islamic Fiqh Council, and most prominent scholars) is that:
- Crypto held as an investment or trade good = zakatable at 2.5% of market value
- Crypto used as medium of exchange = treated like currency, zakatable if held above nisab for a year
- Crypto mining or trading income = treated as trade goods, zakatable on holdings above nisab
Paying this zakat is an obligation, not an innovation.
What the Quran and Sunnah Say
Zakat is one of the most repeated obligations in the entire Quran, often mentioned alongside salah:
ููุฃููููู ููุง ุงูุตููููุงุฉู ููุขุชููุง ุงูุฒููููุงุฉู
"Establish prayer and give zakat." โ (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:43)
The Prophet ๏ทบ explained the categories of wealth subject to zakat:
"On silver, one-fortieth [2.5%] is due. But if you have only 190 dirhams, nothing is due." โ (Sunan Abi Dawud 1558)
Scholars extend this to all forms of wealth โ gold, trade goods, agricultural products, livestock, and now digital assets. The underlying principle is that zakat purifies wealth:
ุฎูุฐู ู ููู ุฃูู ูููุงููููู ู ุตูุฏูููุฉู ุชูุทููููุฑูููู ู ููุชูุฒูููููููู ู ุจูููุง
"Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to increase." โ (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:103)
Cryptocurrency is wealth. If you benefit from it and it grows, it falls under the general ruling on mal (wealth). Denying this would require proving that crypto somehow does not constitute wealth โ which is difficult to argue when it can be exchanged for real goods and services.
Why This Is Actually Hard
The nafs finds creative reasons to avoid paying zakat. With crypto, those reasons multiply:
"The scholars don't all agree." True โ there are some minority dissenting views. But the majority position is clear, and waiting for unanimous scholarly consensus on emerging technologies is a recipe for never paying.
"My crypto value fluctuates too much to calculate." This is solvable. You pick your zakat anniversary date, take the market value of your holdings on that date, and calculate 2.5%. That is all.
"I don't know if it is really wealth." Your portfolio dashboard shows a number. That number represents real purchasing power. That is wealth.
Paying zakat on crypto is not the hard part. The hard part is the nafs telling you that the obligation does not apply to you, or that you can defer it until things are more stable.
What to Do โ Practical Steps
Step 1: Set Your Zakat Anniversary Date
Choose a lunar date you will use every year to calculate your zakat. Many Muslims use their birthday, Ramadan 1st, or the Islamic New Year. The key is consistency.
Step 2: Calculate Your Total Crypto Holdings
On your zakat anniversary, check the market value of all your crypto holdings in your local currency. Include all coins and tokens across all wallets and exchanges.
Step 3: Check Against Nisab
Compare your total crypto value to the current silver nisab (595 grams of silver in your local currency). If your holdings exceed this, zakat is due. If not, no zakat is owed this cycle.
Step 4: Calculate and Pay 2.5%
Multiply your total crypto holdings value by 0.025. The result is your zakat. Pay it to qualifying recipients: the poor, the indebted, those working to collect and distribute zakat, travelers in need, and others specified in Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60.
Step 5: Make It a Habit
Zakat is an annual discipline. Combine your zakat calculation with your annual financial review. Build it into your calendar as a recurring event. Let your giving be as systematic as your investing.

Dua for Barakah in Wealth

"O Allah, bless us in what You have provided for us and protect us from the punishment of the Fire." โ (Related, various sources)
Say this dua when paying zakat. It transforms the act from a financial transaction into a moment of remembrance and gratitude.
Common Questions
Is crypto trading subject to zakat differently than holding?
Active traders typically calculate zakat on total inventory value on their zakat date, since the entire stock is intended for trade. Long-term holders calculate zakat on market value above nisab. The principles are the same as applied to traditional trade goods.
What if I lost money on crypto this year โ do I still owe zakat?
Zakat is calculated on the value you hold on your zakat date, not on gains or losses from the year. If your holdings on the zakat date exceed nisab, zakat is due. If they are below nisab, it is not. A loss does not create a debt of zakat.
Is DeFi (decentralized finance) income subject to zakat?
Contemporary scholars generally treat DeFi staking or liquidity pool income as investment returns โ zakatable above nisab. See our guide on is staking crypto haram for the full picture on the permissibility question. The broader question of is crypto haram is also worth reading for context. For related questions about Bitcoin specifically, see is Bitcoin haram.
Does paying zakat on crypto mean I accept it is halal?
Not necessarily. Some scholars who consider certain crypto trading strategies problematic still say zakat is due on the wealth held. The zakat obligation applies to wealth in your possession above nisab, independent of how you acquired it. However, if the crypto was acquired through definitively haram means, that is a separate question requiring repentance and return of ill-gotten gains, not just zakat.
Your Zakat Is Your Purification
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"Sadaqah does not decrease wealth." โ (Sahih Muslim 2588)
This applies to zakat with even greater force. When you give zakat on your crypto, you are not diminishing your wealth โ you are purifying it, inviting Allah's barakah, and fulfilling a pillar of your faith.
The person who holds wealth without paying zakat is described in the Quran with serious consequence. The person who pays it โ consistently, accurately, on time โ is on the path of the righteous.
Calculate your zakat. Pay it. Do it every year. Build that habit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to pay zakat on cryptocurrency?
Yes, according to the majority of contemporary Islamic scholars, if you hold cryptocurrency above the nisab threshold for a full lunar year, zakat is due. Crypto held as a long-term investment is treated like gold or trade goods. Crypto used as currency in daily transactions is treated like cash.
What is the nisab threshold for crypto zakat?
Nisab is calculated by comparing your crypto holdings to either the gold nisab (85 grams of gold) or the silver nisab (595 grams of silver). Most scholars recommend using the silver nisab as it is lower and ensures more Muslims fulfill the obligation. Convert the nisab value to your local currency and compare it to your crypto holdings in fiat value.
How do I calculate zakat on crypto?
Calculate the market value of all your crypto holdings on your zakat anniversary date. If that total exceeds the nisab and you have held it for a full lunar year, you owe 2.5% of the total market value in zakat.
What if my crypto value dropped below nisab during the year?
If your holdings drop below the nisab at any point during the year, the zakat year resets. Zakat only becomes due on holdings that stay above nisab for a full, uninterrupted lunar year.
Can I pay crypto zakat in crypto rather than cash?
Scholars differ. Some say zakat must be paid in the category of wealth it was calculated from โ so crypto zakat can be paid in crypto. Others say cash payment that reaches the recipient is equally valid. Both are accepted positions. The key is that the zakat actually reaches those entitled to it.
