How Many Sunnah Prayers in a Day — and Why the Prophet Never Missed Them

The five fard prayers are the obligation. But the Prophet ﷺ did not stop at the obligation. Every day, without fail, he prayed additional voluntary rakats surrounding the fard prayers. He called these his consistent companions — and he described their reward in remarkable terms.

There are 12 confirmed sunnah rakats per day. If you are only praying the fard prayers, you are leaving a Prophetic practice — and a promised house in Jannah — on the table.

The Short Answer

The sunnah muakkadah (confirmed sunnah prayers) total 12 rakats per day:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Whoever prays twelve rak'ahs during the day and night, a house will be built for him in Paradise: two rak'ahs before Fajr, two rak'ahs before Dhuhr and two after it, two rak'ahs after Maghrib, and two rak'ahs after Isha."

The Evidence — Why These Twelve

The Foundation: The Two Rakats Before Fajr

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"The two rak'ahs of Fajr are better than the world and all that it contains."

— (Sahih Muslim 725)

This is not rhetorical exaggeration. The Prophet was describing genuine spiritual weight. He kept these two rakats even when traveling — when he shortened and sometimes combined other prayers, these two he maintained. Aisha (رضي الله عنها) reported he never missed them. (Sahih Bukhari 1159)

Two rakats before the fard Fajr — brief, focused, offered before the fard prayer as a preparation — and the Prophet calls them better than the world and everything in it.

The Dhuhr Sunnahs — Four Before, Two After

The Prophet prayed four rakats before Dhuhr and two after. There is a special narration about these:

"Whoever prays four rak'ahs before Dhuhr and four after it, Allah will forbid the Fire from touching him."

— (Abu Dawud 1270, Tirmidhi 428 — graded hasan by Al-Albani)

The four before Dhuhr are sunnah muakkadah. The two after are also confirmed. Together they represent the largest sunnah commitment around a single fard prayer.

After Maghrib — Two Rakats

Two rakats immediately after Maghrib. These are among the most commonly maintained sunnah prayers by observant Muslims worldwide. The Prophet maintained them consistently, and they carry the specific blessing of being prayed at a transitional time — between day and night, when the day's account is being settled.

After Isha — Two Rakats

Two rakats after Isha, before sleep. These close the day of prayer as the Fajr sunnah opened it. The Prophet maintained them and specifically warned against allowing sleep to overtake these rakats.

The Details — What Each Sunnah Involves

Unlike fard prayers, sunnah prayers have more flexibility:

• Recitation: You may recite longer surahs silently or audibly (audible is better for sunnah prayers where fard would be silent, and vice versa, though this is a detail scholars differ on — praying silently throughout is valid)
• Four-rakat sunnah: Prayed as two sets of two, with a tashahhud sitting between them (Hanafi school differs — they pray four as a unit)
• Intention: Internal intention is sufficient; no need to verbalize

What If You Miss a Sunnah Prayer?

The Sunnah can be made up — but with limits. The Prophet specifically made up the two rakats of Fajr sunnah on one occasion when he had slept through them, praying them after the fard Fajr. (Abu Dawud 1267) The majority of scholars permit making up missed sunnah prayers.

However, the stronger position is: prioritize praying them on time. If you miss the Fajr sunnah because you woke up late, pray the fard Fajr first, then the sunnah after. If you miss the Dhuhr sunnah because of a meeting, complete the sunnah whenever possible after Dhuhr ends.

Don't Let Doubt Win

Some Muslims avoid sunnah prayers because they feel they are not "ready" — their fard is not consistent enough, their focus not good enough. This is the nafs creating a false hierarchy.

The Prophet did not say: perfect your fard, then add sunnah. He modeled both, consistently, throughout his life. The sunnah prayers are not for advanced Muslims — they are for every Muslim who wants to do more than the minimum.

The Quran describes the believing slaves of Allah as those who "spend the night in prostration and standing for their Lord." (Surah Al-Furqan, 25:64). Standing beyond what is required is the mark of a believer, not an expert.

Common Questions

Is Witr included in the 12 sunnah rakats? Witr is not included in the 12 confirmed sunnah rakats mentioned in the famous hadith. However, Witr is so strongly emphasized that some scholars (particularly the Hanafi school) consider it wajib (obligatory in a lesser sense than fard). The Prophet said: "The Witr is truth; whoever does not pray Witr is not from us." (Abu Dawud 1416) Do not neglect Witr.

What about the Duha prayer? Duha (the forenoon prayer) is a confirmed sunnah prayer but a separate category from the sunnah prayers associated with the five fard prayers. It consists of at least 2 rakats, ideally 4 or more, prayed when the sun has risen and is hot (roughly 20 minutes after sunrise until 20 minutes before Dhuhr). It carries immense reward and the Prophet called it the prayer of the "awwabin" (those who frequently turn to Allah).

Can I pray all the sunnah prayers without praying the fard prayers? No. Fard prayers are obligatory; sunnah prayers are supplementary. Missing fard prayers is a serious sin that sunnah prayers cannot compensate for. Always prioritize the fard first.
