The Short Answer
The fard (obligatory) portion of Jummah is 2 rakats, prayed behind the imam after the khutbah (sermon). But Jummah Friday prayer has additional sunnah rakats before and after that the Prophet ﷺ strongly encouraged.
Here is the full picture:
| Prayer | Rakats | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Sunnah before khutbah | 4 | Sunnah qabliyya (recommended) |
| Jummah fard | 2 | Fard (obligatory) |
| Sunnah after Jummah | 4 + 2 | Sunnah ba'diyya (recommended) |
Total with sunnah prayers: 12 rakats. The non-negotiable part: 2 fard rakats after the khutbah.
The Evidence
The Prophet ﷺ commanded Muslims to attend Jummah and established its specific form:
مَنِ اغْتَسَلَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَتَطَهَّرَ بِمَا اسْتَطَاعَ ثُمَّ ادَّهَنَ أَوْ مَسَّ مِنْ طِيبِ امْرَأَتِهِ ثُمَّ رَاحَ فَلَمْ يُفَرِّقْ بَيْنَ اثْنَيْنِ...
"Whoever performs ghusl on Friday, purifies himself as much as possible, uses perfume or uses his wife's perfume, then goes out (for Jummah) and does not separate between two people..." — (Sahih Bukhari 883)
On the number of rakats after Jummah, Abdullah ibn Umar reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to pray 2 rakats after Jummah at home. (Sahih Bukhari 937, sunnah.com)
In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever wants to pray (sunnah) after Jummah, let him pray 4 rakats." (Sahih Muslim 881, sunnah.com)
The scholars reconcile these by understanding: you may pray 2 at home or 4 at the masjid, or 4 and then 2 — all are established from authentic narrations.
The 4 sunnah before Jummah is based on the practice of the Companions and is held as established sunnah in the Hanafi and other schools.
The Details — Real Cases Muslims Ask About
What do I do when I arrive at the masjid before Jummah?
Pray 2 or 4 sunnah rakats immediately. Do not sit without praying — the Prophet ﷺ said: "If any of you enters the masjid, let him not sit until he has prayed 2 rakats." (Sahih Bukhari 1163) These entry rakats (tahiyyat al-masjid) can be combined with the pre-Jummah sunnah.
What if the imam starts the khutbah when I arrive?
Sit immediately and listen. The khutbah replaces 2 of the normal pre-prayer rakats in some scholarly views. Do not pray while the khutbah is being given — listening to the khutbah is an obligation (wajib in the Hanafi school, sunnah mu'akkadah in others). Talking during the khutbah is also prohibited.
I am stuck at work — what happens if I miss Jummah?
Pray Dhuhr (4 rakats) instead. Jummah is a congregational prayer that cannot be performed individually. If you miss it completely, the Dhuhr obligation remains. Frequent unexcused absences from Jummah are a serious matter — the Prophet ﷺ warned that consecutive absent attendance can seal one's heart. (Sahih Muslim 865)
Which madhab am I following if I pray 4 sunnah before Jummah?
The Hanafi school explicitly recommends 4 sunnah before Jummah as established practice. The Shafi'i school recommends praying as many rakats as possible before the khutbah. All four major madhabs agree on 2 fard rakats during the prayer itself.
Can I lead Jummah at home if I cannot make it to the masjid?
No. Jummah requires a congregation and, in most scholarly views, an established community setting. If you cannot attend, pray Dhuhr individually.
Do Not Let Doubt Win
One of the most common patterns on Fridays is arriving at the masjid uncertain about what to pray, feeling awkward, and either sitting without praying or rushing through whatever you think is right.
The Jummah routine is actually simple once you know it. The doubt and waswas around it — "Did I pray the right number? Was my Jummah valid?" — is mostly ignorance about what to do, not a fiqh problem.
Now you know:
- Arrive early — pray 4 sunnah
- Listen to the khutbah
- Pray 2 fard with the imam
- After: pray 4 + 2 sunnah (at masjid or at home)
Done. No scrambling, no second-guessing.

Quick Reference — Jummah Rakats
Before khutbah:
- 4 rakats sunnah (recommended, especially in Hanafi school)
The main prayer:
- 2 rakats fard (obligatory, after khutbah, with imam)
After Jummah:
- 4 rakats sunnah at masjid (recommended)
- 2 rakats sunnah at home (also recommended, based on authentic hadith)
- You may do 4 at masjid + 2 at home, or 2 at home alone — both are valid
Common Questions
Is there a specific surah to recite during Jummah fard?
The Prophet ﷺ sometimes recited Surah Al-Jumu'ah (62) in the first rakat and Surah Al-Munafiqoon (63) in the second, or alternatively Surah Al-A'la (87) and Surah Al-Ghashiyah (88). Following one of these sunnah recitations earns extra reward. See /blog/sunnah-acts-on-jummah for the full Friday sunnah list.
Is Jummah 2 fard or does it replace Dhuhr?
Jummah replaces Dhuhr on Friday for those for whom it is obligatory. The 2 rakats of Jummah are the obligatory prayer for that time — not in addition to Dhuhr. You do not pray Dhuhr after Jummah.
What if I only caught 1 rakat with the imam?
You have caught Jummah. Make up the second rakat on your own after the imam says salam. If you caught less than 1 rakat (the imam was already in the last tashahhud), you have missed Jummah — pray Dhuhr (4 rakats) instead.
Should I read Surah Al-Kahf on Friday?
Yes — this is a strong sunnah with great reward. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever reads Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him between the two Fridays." (Al-Hakim 2:399) See /blog/when-to-read-surah-kahf for the best times to read it. Also explore /blog/what-is-jummah for the full significance of Friday in Islam.
Closing
Jummah is one of the great gifts of the Islamic week. The Prophet ﷺ described it as superior to Eid — a day of collective remembrance, communal connection, and direct supplication to Allah.
Knowing the correct number of rakats is step one. Showing up consistently, praying all the sunnah, listening to the khutbah with presence — that is the full Jummah experience.
Make it a habit, not just an obligation you squeeze in.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rakats is Jummah prayer?
The obligatory (fard) portion of Jummah is 2 rakats, prayed after the khutbah. Before the khutbah, 4 sunnah rakats are recommended. After the fard, 4 sunnah + 2 sunnah rakats are recommended.
Do I pray 4 sunnah before Jummah or 2?
The majority of scholars recommend 4 sunnah rakats before the Jummah khutbah, though some say 2. Praying 4 is the more cautious and widely practised position.
What if I arrive late and miss the imam for Jummah?
If you miss any part of Jummah with the imam, complete what you can with the imam, then make up the rest. If you missed the entire fard prayer, pray Dhuhr (4 rakats) instead — Jummah cannot be prayed alone.
Do I pray sunnah after Jummah at the masjid or at home?
Both are fine. The Prophet encouraged praying 2-4 sunnah at home after Jummah, but praying them at the masjid is also valid. Some scholars prefer doing them at home to differentiate from the fard.
Is Jummah fard for women?
Jummah prayer is not obligatory for women, travellers, those who are sick, or children. Women may attend voluntarily, which is encouraged, but they are not sinful if they pray Dhuhr instead.
