You are reading a webtoon. The story is interesting, the art is good, and then — suddenly — a scene comes up that makes you feel uncomfortable. Not because of external judgment, but because something inside you recognizes it is not right.

Webtoons are not haram by default. The medium — digital comic strips — is neutral. What determines the ruling is the content.

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ

"And do not approach immoralities — what is apparent of them and what is concealed."

The prohibition is on fawahish (immoralities) in all forms — including what you consume mentally. The question for any webtoon is: does this content bring immorality into your mind and heart?

What the Quran and Sunnah Say About Media and the Eyes

Islam's approach to what we consume with our eyes, ears, and minds is consistent across all times and formats. The Prophet ﷺ said:

الْعَيْنَانِ تَزْنِيَانِ وَزِنَاهُمَا النَّظَرُ

Al-'aynani tazniyan wa zina-huma an-nadhar

"The eyes commit their own form of zina, and the zina of the eyes is the gaze."

This is not about webtoons specifically — it is about the eyes consuming what arouses haram desire. A webtoon that contains sexually explicit content functions the same way as any other form of explicit visual content. The screen, the medium, or the art style does not change what is happening in the heart.

At the same time, the Quran uses parables, stories, and narratives extensively — including stories with conflict, struggle, and moral complexity. Islamic tradition has always permitted engaging with stories and art that reflect human experience without crossing into what is explicitly forbidden.

Why This Is Actually Hard

Here is where we have to be honest with ourselves.

Webtoon platforms host thousands of stories across a huge content range. Many are entirely clean — adventure, comedy, fantasy, slice-of-life. Many are explicitly inappropriate. And many are in a grey zone: romantic but not graphic, dark but not gratuitous.

The nafs is strategic about the grey zone. It pulls you in with a clean story, then gradually the content escalates. By the time a scene appears that crosses a line, you are emotionally invested in the characters and your judgment is compromised. This is not a hypothetical — it is the actual pattern webtoon readers describe.

Your nafs will argue:

• "It is just a drawing — it is not real"
• "The story is so good, I can skip the bad parts"
• "Everyone reads this, it is fine"
• "I am not actually doing anything wrong"

Each of these is a nafs-voice worth examining. The fact that it is drawn does not mean it does not affect the heart. Skipping bad parts while maintaining the emotional investment still exposes you to the broader problematic narrative. And the standard for what is fine is not what everyone does — it is what protects your heart and your relationship with Allah.

What to Do About It — Practical Steps

Step 1: Content-screen before you commit

Before starting a new webtoon, check:

• The genre tags — genres like "ecchi," "mature," "adult romance" signal problematic content
• Community reviews — other readers often mention explicit content directly
• The first few episodes for content tone before investing hours into a story

This five-minute check can prevent you from becoming emotionally invested in something you will have to abandon.

Step 2: Apply the clear lines

Content that is clearly impermissible regardless of platform:

• Sexually explicit scenes (visual or narrative)
• Graphic romantic or sexual content between unmarried characters presented approvingly
• Content glorifying magic, witchcraft, or shirk
• Content that openly mocks Islamic values or Muslims

When this content appears, the ruling is clear — stop reading and do not return to that story.

Step 3: Evaluate the grey zone honestly

For content that is not explicitly haram but feels questionable:

Ask yourself: if I described this scene to someone who loves me and wants the best for my akhirah, would I be comfortable? If the answer is no, that is your answer.

Ask yourself: after reading this, do I feel closer to Allah or more distant? The heart knows. Trust it.

Step 4: Replace, do not just restrict

The nafs does not respond well to pure restriction without replacement. If webtoons are filling a need for stories and creative engagement, find Islamic or wholesome alternatives — fiction with clean content, Islamic history, books, podcasts.

The goal is not to become someone who consumes nothing — it is to become someone whose consumption builds rather than erodes.

Step 5: Build a positive consumption rhythm

What you fill your mind with shapes your desires and your thoughts. If an hour of webtoons is regularly replaced with even thirty minutes of Quran and thirty minutes of a clean book, the shape of your interior life changes over time.

رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَن يَحْضُرُونِ

Rabbi a'udhu bika min hamazatish-shayatin wa a'udhu bika rabbi an yahdhurun

"My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the whispers of the devils, and I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me."

Is it haram to read webtoons in general, even without explicit content? No. Clean webtoons with permissible content are not haram. Islamic scholars generally permit fiction and stories that do not contain prohibited content — the medium does not add prohibition.

What about webtoons with magic in them? Magic as a storytelling element (fantasy magic systems, power abilities) differs from content that promotes actual occult practices or shirk. Most fantasy webtoons use magic as a narrative device — this is generally considered permissible by scholars in the same way that fantasy books with magic systems are. Content that actively promotes real-world occult practice or attributes supernatural power to other than Allah is a different matter.
